Wide Screen Aspect = True a FPS killer?

Featured Replies

While the author of the video is 100% correct in saying wideviewaspect=true with zoom 1.0 is technically correct, some planes are just hard to fly like that.

Since I sit a bit farther from my screen than the author of the video, my "correct" zoom would be 1.25, but I find that a bit too close and a bit less field of view than I'd prefer. The most interesting thing about the video for me was the mathematics involved, which confirmed my mostly seat of the pants calculations (yes, I did use some trig as well).

The clincher for me was getting a flight in a Cessna 172. I was really surprised at how big the runway looked on final. In the sim, with the view zoomed out, the runway is tiny on final approach. I started experimenting with higher zooms and found 1.0 to look about right.

Of course, that level of zoom isn't for everyone, but it would be nice if people didn't try to pass off a 0.3 zoom as being the only correct zoom factor.

It's a give and take.

Yeah, 1.0 true may be technically correct but you also get no peripheral vision that way, which is in itself very unrealistic.

The terrain engine also doesn't like such high zoom levels and things will look much worse in the distance.

.40 on false or .80 on true are nearly identical views/zoom levels and give a clear representation of terrain at most distances.

That's always been the sweet spot for me.

I have never seen people trying to do that...? I use 0.4 but I would NEVER say it's the correct view: it clearly isn't the correct (most realistic) view but for me it's the most enjoyable view and that's ALL I care about.

I'm a 'True' man, with zoom at 0.60 myself.

1.0 is awful, but 0.40 is a bit too scaled back for me.

Same settings here!

I didn't mean you, Jeroen. :)

I don't notice any lack of peripheral vision, even though I know intellectually that the lack exists. I use TrackIR, which is pretty much mandatory for that level of zoom.

WideAspect = False  definitely gives a drop in frames, on my system.

Benchmarked it myself.   Around 3 FPS drop when using False compared to True.

If you're seeing the opposite to that there must be some reason for that.

Makes no sense and is the complete opposite of what happens(unless some crazy zoomed out settings), false = less rendering of Terrain Mesh, AG, AI, Objects and so on...

I recently switched over to WideViewAspect=True and have the zoom set to between 0.9 and 1.0 most of the time. It has massively improved my perception of things in the cockpit environment.

I like the 0.9 setting in the NGX, as it gives me a little more peripheral vision in the VC, especially as I pull the seat position back a few notches...

Thanks for posting the videos Ryan. His delivery may not be the most gripping, but he gets his point across and clearly.

Same here.

Dirk.

Can someone explain why my default head position is way back with WideViewAspect=True, compared to False? I've got 16:9 resolution & InitialZoom = 0.7.

With False the starting zoom 0.7 is perfect & I can zoom in with small increments of 0.1 on the panel, with +/-. With true I'm way back with 0.7, so I have to zoom in to about 1.50 to get the same view & I have to zoom with 0.5 steps, which makes the zooming less accurate.

So I use False since that's getting me more zoom accuracy.

Kind regards
R.G

Both of these are covered in those videos.

First of all, the WideViewAspect LOOKS zoomed out more because the top to bottom is constant and the width has changed with =TRUE. Also, you can zoom in fine increments using shift +/-. If you have to, you can also change the default zoom for that view in either the config file or your default saved game file (this last part isn't in the video).

When I set it to =False with the new camera definitions found on page 1 I get noticeable stuttering in the VC.  I will experiment a little more and see what happens.
