VRS F/A-18 worth buying?

I would note, in regards to FSX not providing a combat environment - although that is true, a good portion of military aviation around the world doesn't actually involve any combat and so FSX works just fine.  ^_^

I have it too and is a fine plane but the problem is a little bit that you have to do some modifications within fsx settings and those

are different if you change to another aircraft.

This Ac is for flight simulator so it simulates flight unlike any other. It's not dcs or janes fa18.

Nothing like carrier ops and a2a refueling and playing with the amazing tacpack avionics (radar modes and flir pod) downing drones, ai ac and sinking ai ships.

I use the exact same fsx settings as others so not sure prev post is referring to.

It's one of those few 'wow' addons, like the original pic767, pmdg 747, maddog md80, RA tduke, cera b412, and dino's f14d.

Good stuff.

I bought it, somewhat on sale. I don't regret it but I rarely fly it. Someone said its the PMDG of military jets. One major thing it lacks is a NAV database update able by Navigraph. Also, unless you get the tacpack, the autopilot is based on default (FSX std) autopilot and sucks pretty bad, especially flying airways VOR to VOR. They told me the TP contains a custom AP which would be a lot smoother. So those are two big reasons I don't fly it.

Other than that its gorgeous especially at night and the NV through HUD is awesome! It also hand flies amazingly well.

One minor quibble - TacPack is not fully DX10 compatible and VRS have not indicated they have any interest in making it so.

It's the FLIR that doesn't work in DX10, but TacPack looks fine in DX9. Before anyone asks, yes there is a P3D version and no, the P3D version is not available to the general public. The TacPack SDK, which is presently in in beta, allows various 3rd party military aircraft to have some or all of the features of the VRS F/A-18E. See for example:

Other points? If you want to do carrier ops, you need Acceleration. FSX at War is under development, but there is no ETA for its release.

Wow, great to see so many responses. Thank you all very much for your advice. Obviously, the majority says its worth buying, so I did. I also used a discount code that gave me so 20% discounts on both the superbug and tacpack.

I just tried it out and I have to say, I am very satisfied. It is truly an amazing quality bird. Pitty that the sim is so old. I will replace the VRS Superbug with the DCS one once it is available of course.

I like BMS as well, I have had it for quite some time, it is just that I cannot work with a simulator that old. DCS is the highest in performance, quality and realism, but unfortunately doesn't have any American fighter jets (only Flaming Cliffs). With FSX, I can give up some performance to get the F/A-18. Falcon BMS only has the realism, which is nice of course, but I prefer the F/A-18 over the F-16 anyways.

Thanks for all the advice!

*shrug*

You should check out the latest version, sir, of FBMS.  Yo may be surprised.  PLus, the community is still working on it.  FSX is frozen in 2006.
