Winds Aloft Import - Some Questions I Don't See Answered in Manual

Featured Replies

I made my first attempt at using the request winds function in the FMC this afternoon and was unsuccessful.  I am using OpusFSX (latest beta) and am aware that the manual is actually the .txt file in the PMDG/Wx folder (I have read this).  So I have a few questions:

1. The .txt file says the file format should be named ICAO1ICAO2.wx.  Is the PMDG T7 looking for this file based on the departure and arrival airports placed in the FMC, based on a company route loaded in the FMC or based on a flight plan loaded in FSX?  In other words:

-Can I still use this import function if I build my own route in the FMC. For instance, my test flight was KLAX to PHNL with the route being VTU5.DINTY R576 DENNS.MAGGI3.  This is easy to build on my own in the FMC.  It should contain the same waypoints +/- the SID/STAR waypoints.

-Basically a follow-up, but must the .wx file and the FMC contain the exact same list of waypoints (no more, no less, no additional SID/STAR waypoints), or will it populate the data for waypoints where a match is found?

2. The .txt description talks about copying and pasting directly from AS2012.  I am not entirely clear on the precise format of this and am curious if this could be elaborated.  It looks like the higher altitudes have an extra tab for each line and some waypoints look like they have an extra tab in the first line (lower altitudes - in the example file BXK, AVE, BSR).  Is this just notepad not word wrapping well or is this part of the formatting.

3. If I adjust the flight plan after importing it and the winds aloft data (to add appropriate SID/STARs), will I lose the wind data?  I'm still working out the details, but I'm finding a lot of edits to wind data when entered manually propagate forward (and even sometimes backwards), ruining a lot of work.

1. i'm not positive about this, but i think it is based on the airports in the fmc, not the fsx flight plan. although i'm not sure why you would have different ones in this case anyway.

i think it mentioned in the manual that it just populates the points that exist so you could use a subset of them if you want for some reason.

i'm pretty sure it doesn't matter if you enter the route yourself.or load it as a company route

2. yeah, the formatting is a bit weird looking in the manual, but if you just directly cut and paste from the report in as2012 it works fine. for example my file looks like this::

3. not sure, haven't tried it. i've been lazy and i have just been loading it up once at the start, and find my fuel usage is already ridiculously close to the predicted usage, so i haven't really bothered heh.. in the next few flights i wll probably start filling out the descent forecast anyway, but even without it i seem to be able to hit all my restrictions pretty easily, maybe i just got lucky so far with that

cheers

1. It's based on the ORIGIN and DEST airports entered on the route page.

2. Do not believe the formatting matters. It's a tab-delimited text file.

3. The propagation is how the real thing works. SID and STAR stuff goes into FORECAST.

Hi all,

I seem to have an even more basic problem:

I can select the part of the AS2012 report, but cannot copy it.

What am I doing wrong?

Many thanks in advance for the right answer :)

Great plane btw!

Happy Landings!

Highlight the winds information in the report and press control insert to copy.

Try CTRL+C to copy

I am following the instructions to the letter but am getting invalid entry for some reason. I am using activesky 2012 and naming as eg EGLLOMDB.WX

Banner_FS2Crew_NGX_Driver.jpg

Thanks Falcon999 and Ceri.

I have created the file.

When I try to use it I get Invalid entry as well.

Maybe the guys from AS2012 can add an "Export to PMDG" button or PMDG acn make an Import from AS2012 one?

Happy Landings!

Excellent, so I should have no worries about how I get the flight plan in to the FMC as long as the ORIGIN and DEST airports match those in the .wx file?

Understood, I just wasn't sure if there was an extra tab-delimination in that line

Sorry if it sounded otherwise.  I certainly wasn't saying I thought it was a bug or not the way the real thing works.  I just haven't fully gotten down the logic yet and the propagation was throwing me off.

Just to report back:

My problem has been solved.

Windows did put ".txt" behind my ICAO1ICAO2.wx file.

Enjoy flying everybody!

Happy Landings!

You need to use CTRL+C to copy from the Activesky report.  Then open Notebook, CTRL+V to paste it.  Click on file type to select "all"  and save as file type ICAO1ICAO2.wx

You then move the file over to your PMDG WX directory.  I have done this a few times and it works.

Gents,

I don't know what to do but I still get the INVALID ENTRY on the MCDU. I did a OMDB to VVTS. Route name is OMDBVVTS01. I have renamed my text file OMDBVVTS01.wx . I still get the message.

Thanks for your help!

Best regards and always happy landings and three green

the format is just the icao codes, so try OMDBVVTS.wx

Tried that as well, Andy. Still doesn't work or do I have to restart FSX to get it active?

Hello,

I'm having the same problem. I've made sure that the file has the .wx extension, so OMDBLSZH.wx. I don't get an error message. I get the MOD highlighted top left, no new data appears and when I EXEC, nothing happens and the wind fields remain blank.

I wanted to rename the file but access was denied because the file is in use by fsx.exe.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Chad

Kind regards,

Alan

Are you sure your clicking on the right select keys by the arrows after hitting execute. The winds show on the next page after importing the file not the same page you typed in icaoicao.

Hope this makes sense. I imported six different files every hour on a flight across the pond.
