October 29, 201312 yr I am getting old and never thought about tablets until.... Opinions/recommendations please ref specific addons and tablets "to match"? regards David Wightman
October 30, 201312 yr Yes, I use FSX with tablets; generally paracetamol, or if I've had too much red wine, Antacids. Sorry.... Do you mean things like charts and EFB stuff on tablets, rather than running FSX itself on a tablet?
October 30, 201312 yr Author Actually I may well be the oldest simmer here on AVSIM, 85 and counting. However Dave, I am not too old to grant some credit for what I might recognise as a grade three attempt at a basic wit. "nuff of that"! With maybe the new Nexus 7 in mind an application eg: GPS or moving map to sync with FSX, there may be several others, addons that is and/or "tablets". Dave Wightman
October 30, 201312 yr I got an ipad for my birthday and immediatly went looking for FS aps. Here are a few faves: 1. Virtual CDU from Virtual Avionics - turns your ipad into a touch screen enabled FMS for the PMDG NGX. Rumor has it they will release a 777 version when PMDG releases the SDK for that big bird. Uses wireless - works flawlessly once set up. 2. FS Kneeboard 2 is a good chart program for North America - terminal procedure charts, en route charts, sectionals, plus a nifty little weather ap and checklists for popular airplanes. This is not a moving map program - but instead gives you a bag full of charts that's very easy to work with. 3. Remote Flight Cockpit HD will give you the sacred six gauges on your ipad so you can dedicate your big monitor to outside views. 4. FS Widgets publishes FS Knee Board noted above, They also publish flight planners including moving maps as well. There is a wide selection on their website. Colin
October 30, 201312 yr David, I use "Flight Map" for FSX with my Android Assus 10" Tablet. It also works with the 7" tablets. It does sych with FSX and is very easy to use. I think it was less than $5.00 at Google apps. Also you can do a search in this forum and find all about it. Hope this will help. I am getting closer to the 80's every day. Great to be that young and enjoy flight simulation. October 30, 201312 yr I surf AVSIM while the autopilot does his job Joking aside, I find a tablet a must have for charts and checlists. Now I keep a clean desk at all times, and don't need floodlights to read. I store pdf files, and search for relevant stuff on the Internet while flying. I mostly use FSX for virtual travel and I search up and read the history of any place I fly to. Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!
October 31, 201312 yr FS Widgets publishes FS Knee Board noted above, No, FS Kneeboard is produced by Inquisitive Graphics, not FSWidgets. October 31, 201312 yr FlightMap is a great app for Adroid tablets, I think it's worth getting the 10 inch version, especially if you're also going to be using it to view charts. View his youtube video to see the full functionality (http://vineripesoftware.wordpress.com/flightmap/). The ability to "pinch and zoom" with your fingers makes reading even small print a breeze, I'd rather view a chart on the tablet, than a printed version, save me having to keep swapping specs! I've got a 10 inch and 7 inch android tablet, and recently got a friend of mine one of these budget 10 inch tablets that are commonly advertised for around £100, I was very impressed with it for the money. The ability to effectively have a hand held wireless spare monitor, with no loss of FPS is a great advantage. Plus when I'm cruising through Euro-Land at FL370, it's nice to know exactly what those cities below me are. Eugene
October 31, 201312 yr Author Thanks one and all. I have never owned a "Tablet" but I had rather hoped either the Samsung 3.8 or even the new Nexus 7 might offer the facility for Android compatible FSX addons. I am prepared to wait a while to see if the "lesser breed" follow what is still regarded by many as the "leader of the pack"! Once again thanks to all My regards Dave Wightman
November 1, 201312 yr I am prepared to wait a while to see if the "lesser breed" follow what is still regarded by many as the "leader of the pack"! No need to wait too long before dipping a toe in the water. Just did an ebay search in the UK for 7 inch Android tablets, for £47 inc post ($75 US), there are tablets that will do what you want. They won't be as fast or as cute as a Nexus 7, but use the same software (Jellybean Android 4.2) as the 2012 version of the Nexus 7 I have, and displaying PDF charts, and using apps like FlighMap are not processor intensive, so these cheap versions should do all you need. Here's the spec of the one I viewed on ebay, not high compared to a Nexus, but a cheap way of testing the market. Eugene 7" All-Winner Tablet Android 4.2 Jelly Bean 1.5GHz CPU, Mali GPU 4GB Built-In Storage, expandable by a further 32GB via SD Card 512MB DDR RAM Wi-Fi Enabled Micro USB for external USB stick, 3G Dongle or Keyboard Dual Camera (Front 0.3mp, Back 2mp) 5 Point Capacitive Touch Screen Earphone Jack G Sensor (Display Rotates with Tablet) Great for Facebook, YouTube, Candy Crush, Angry Birds, E-Mail...Thousands of Apps
November 1, 201312 yr Author Thanks so much for info' will see if I can put it to good use. Regards Dave Wightman
November 1, 201312 yr Commercial Member Although Remote Flight Cockpit HD was mentioned, I find it's companion app - Remote Flight Radio HD to be far more useful to me. Gives you radios, autopilot, transponder, etc. iPad though, so it's obviously not of interest to everyone. However, these days I seem to use it less often; most of the planes I've been flying lately have such beautiful VC's that I haven't wanted to replace any of their function outside of the monitor, so to speak. November 18, 201312 yr Commercial Member I've tried several of the sub $100 tablets and most are complete and total junk. The best "cheap" tablet I have found is the Asus MemoPad HD which is a 7 inch tablet for around $150. You can find my review of this tablet here: http://vineripesoftware.wordpress.com/2013/08/17/asus-memo-pad-hd-7-review/ It's very fast and has a great screen with micro-sd support. http://www.amazon.com/MeMOPad-HD-7-Inch-White-ME173X-A1-WH/dp/B00E0FDYLI/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1376772506&sr=8-4&keywords=memo+pad+hd
November 18, 201312 yr I've started to heavily rely on my iPad for fsx of late, I use FSXfollow which is a moving map overlaying google maps which is a neat little app. As mentioned earlier I use the virtual CDU for the NGX which works extremely well and turns my iPad into a fully functional flight management computer. I use pfpx for flight planning and email the exported despatch and load sheet to myself which I then open on my iPad to input the data into the Sim. Also I can email Jepessen sim charts for viewing on my IPad. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
