FSX DX10 or P3D DX11

Featured Replies

I read that P3D 2.0 is available today.  While I'm happy with FSX and the way it looks and works in DX-10, part of me feels that it might be nice to have a sim that is growing and developing and is DX-11 capable.  The other part of me is too lazy to take all the time and effort to get all the planes and add-ons to work with P3D.  Is anyone considering going to DX-11 with P3D 2.0?

Well, my choice was the DX10 fixer, and I am really happy I have chosen that way... why?

1) My main simulation platform is no longer FSX, but rather X-Plane 10. It's in X-plane 10 and it's successors that I really intend to make my simming investment, yet...

2) FSX still has some important features missing in X-Plane 10, and some add-ons too, like my 3 PMDGs, ASN, Aerosoft's AXE and not much more... For good GA I really have already very good / better choices in X-Plane...

3) I do not intend to upgrade my rig anytime soon, so, spending my money in the Fixer gave me the chance to "upgrade FSX to FSX11", and by a marginal cost I am now able to use it with the additonal smoothness, improved visuals, and to skip the optimization part of simmer life whenever we change platform. Installing the Fixer was straightforward, and only not having read the Manual ( we should!!! ) brought me a couple of issues that were promptly solved here at teh forum.

There is nothing in P3D V2 that can bring me additional joy from what I already get in both X-Plane 10 ( an amzing simulator getting better each day...) and FSX Gold. Yes the volumetric fog looks great, and running DX11 will be very good for those with good / fast graphic boards - not my case .... OTOH I guess products from PMDG comming to P3D v2 will cost a "little fortune" because they're going to be considrered "professional". That's not a reason for me to spend my money since I am not an aviation professional...

I'm thinking that I'm going to try it.  Even with all the great work done here by Steve and others, the core of FSX is old and won't be changed.  I tried XP10 when it first came out with the intention of making that my main sim.  In fact, I uninstalled FSX.    I ended up uninstalling XP10 and re-installing FSX.   I'm not knocking XP10 in any way, but it didn't do it for me. It seems that P3D v2 has the all that I like about FSX and is working to fix the things that can never be changed by third party add-ons.  We'll see.  It's nice that we have some options!

I bought P3D v2 yesterday and installed/used a few addons(FTXG, REX textyres and Opus) and I like everything about it. Even so, I'm going to stick to FSX for the time being, not because P3D is bad in any way, but becasue of the lack of native P3D installers for most of my addons. Orbx, Opus and REX are all P3D v2 ready, but most of my planes(Majestic Q400 and the NGX in particular) will not co-exist with FSX without an P3D installer, and I'm not willing til get rid of FSX until P3D is fully compatible with my must-have-addons, so for that reason alone, FSX will be my nr 1 sim for few months more. Ask me again in 12 months and I'm sure P3D v2 is my nr. 1 sim:-)

Have you seen this Migration tool?  http://www.flightsim.ee/

I'm aware of that one, but I know little about it. Does it let you have ie MajesticQ400 on both FSX and P3D v2 without messing the registry/destroying the FSX install? Do I have to uninstall the Q400 from FSX before installing it again with this tool, or can I use as is with all my addons installed in FSX and then reinstall them into P3d?

I think (I have not tried yet) that you can keep your FSX stuff where it is and install separately into P3Dv2.   So, from what it seems to me, you can keep FSX and P3Dv2 totally separate. In fact, FSX does not even need to be installed.   A version that is compatible with version 2 was just released and the manual can be downloaded for free on their site.

At this stage...I need both..My FSX with its DX10 a fully grown adult although not perfect  and the new budding baby of P3D (although a tad premature at birth.. will survive) and the future.

With the performance and satisfaction I have with FSX on my 4770k using the DX10 Fixer, I have no need to get P3D at this time.  Once I tire of my current experience I may move along to P3D, but one thing is certain: I'm done buying any more add ons unless they are 100% P3D ready.

I have both on my system and I am impressed with P3DV2.  I wouldn't rush to upgrade though and let guinea pigs like me go through the pain and suffering of getting it to work properly.  I am totally impressed with the performance but I see very little difference so far between DX10 and DX11 (other than the VC shadows are much brighter and realistic).  I plan on using both sims for some time until everything can be fully ported over to the new engine.

Best regards,

I've bought the Migration tool, and it works almost flawlessly:-) Only one not working so far is the Q400, so my FSX is basically now a pure Majestic Q400 simulator, while P3D runs everything else. I have taken a PMDG break, but will re-engage when an official P3D installer is released:-)

My only consern is the runwaylighting in P3D, which is a bit weak, meaning, I really can't see any lights until I'm very close to the airport, but that I need to investigate a bit further to see if this fault of my own or my free Norwaystuff or sanything else before I make a big complain:-)

That's good to hear!  I'm going to install P3Dv2 next week.  Did you re-install all of your other aircraft using the Migration Tool or drag and drop the files from FSX?  My goal, even as good as FSX is with DX10, is to make P3D my main sim once everything is working OK.

Well, got it too :-/

Very satisfied so far.

FSX in DX10 is a keeper, at least as far as flying the PMDGs goes :-)

I reinstalled them yes, I don't know if you can drag and drop. The only thing I've dragged and dropped is my freeware scenery stuff which have no installers. Only "problem" with that is when uninstalling, it will disappear from your Programs and Features in your Contol Panel even though its still present in FSX. Now, when the times come and I'm ready to go full P3D, I probably will do a full reinstall, so I don't mind having it present in FSX until that day come along.
