using REX4 for textures and Active Sky for weather

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

at the moment I am using Active Sky for weather generation. As far as I am aware, this program also includes textures (such as runways, etc). I have read that it is possible to use REX4 as a texture addon and leave Active Sky for the weather engine. How this works? will there be a conflict when using this two addons?

THanks for your comments!

as far as I know  asn is only  a weather program at  the moment

If you want to use REX textures with ASN, open REX and set up whatever textures you want and export (install or whatever word REX uses) to FSX. Close REX. You don't need to open REX again unless you want to change textures. Use ASN as normal. You'll have weather as depicted by ASN and pretty REX textures.

Hope that's clear (and thorough) enough.

Hi Mike,

Thanks, one more question, have you experience frame drop problems by using the REX textures?

Felipe, I use both, and you can use them even at the same time. REX4 has no weather engine and can be kept open while FSX is running, just have to restart FSX when you install some texture of course. ASN is a weather generation, and also can be kept open. It will update weather as FSX is running.

As for performance drop, of course, to some certain extent: I have no "problems" with it, even can use all at 4096, but when you use 4096 32bit clouds compared to DXT5 1024 which is FSX default, you're *bound* to experience performance drops if clouds massively accumulate.

When there is a thunderstorm or lot of clouding 4096 and 32 bit made my sim go down to 15 FPS so sweet spot to me is dxt 5 and 2048 res. looks beautiful anyway :)

To use REX textures just fire up REX before starting FSX. Select the theme/textures you want to use and have REX install them. Shut down REX. Start FSX. Start AS and it will inject weather using REX textures.

Be sure to try ASN. It is head and shoulders above any other weather engine!

Yes.  REX is a set it and forget it add-on.    Active Sky NEXT is the most amazing thing to hit FSX since the wheel was invented.   Get it.   You will not be disappointed.

DXT5 helps a LOT when it comes down to very cloudy situations, and if your GPU is not Titan, I think it's best to use somewhat lower res, like 2048.

In my case it is not about Gpu. Overclocked 660ti, max 60% usage but CPU is 90% although it's 3570k 4,6 GHz... This is just fsx bad coding ;)

guys I saw on a youtube video the possibility to upload the active sky weather conditions into the FMC of the PMDG 777, is this also possible with the PMDG 737?
