Latest Best Nvidia GPU for FSX?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Does anyone have advice on the latest and best NVIDIA Graphics Card for FSX?  I currently have a GTX 275 -1792 MB card mounted on an Asus P6T MB.  I'm running Widows 7-64bit with 12 gig DDR3 ram, and an i7-920 processor overclocked to 4.0.

Also, I hear that size matters here, since cards are getting bigger, so I don't want to get one too big that won't fit.  Thanks.   Tom

For the latest cards as of Feb. 2014 - if you have enough for your budget, I'd recommend the GTX 780 overclocked edition. I've been using it since it first came out and haven't had any problems at all. It generates what I call "liquid-smooth" FPS, especially the exterior views, which hit around 60-70 for me. Noise level - next to none in FSX.

Hope this helps a bit.

+1, but your cpu will become your bottleneck until you upgrade your system.

Thanks for the help, guys. I have an 800 watt power supply, but do you mean I have to upgrade my processor as well?   Tom

When installing a new graphics card, also make sure your CPU can handle it. For example, if I exaggerate a bit, running a first gen Pentium with a GTX 780 just won't work. You'll only crash your PC. You need the CPU and graphics card to compliment each other; for instance, running a Haswell i3, i5, or i7 and a GTX 780.

I think you should be fine, though.

Your current processor does not support PCIe 3.0; just PCIe 2.0.  The newer graphics cards (700 series) will work, but will in no way be taken full advantage of when coupled with a PCI 2.0e CPU such as yours.  With your CPU a GTX 660 or 670 would be lots.  An older GTX 560 or 570 might even be better as they were designed to work with PCIe 2.0, but they are pretty hard to find new.  The GTX780 is definitely the best card for FSX IF you are planning to upgrade the rest of the system in the fairly near future.  You can just plug it into the new build and take full advantage of its power. Until then you will be limited by the CPU.

There are numerous benchmarks online demonstrating that even an nVidia Titan runs no better with PCIe 3.0 than 2.0. Whether the next gen cards will do the same is unknown.

Thanks guys. I guess my best bet is to stick with what I have until I can afford a newer system.  Tom

Just to chime in here.  Are there any FSX benchmark comparisons for the 770, 780, 780i and Titan GPUs.   I have 770 4G  in a new rig that I barely had time to use before bricking my new FSX install while mucking around with an SDK install.  So several days later nearly back to where I was and there are indications that the GPU on my second networked PC may be failing.  So should I move the 770 to my other PC and get a 780, or a 780i or even a Titan for the FSX machine or would any improvement over the 770 be so minor that it is not worth the expense over just getting a low end gpu for the second PC?

Thanks

I'd like to second this question.  Looking at the raw benchmark at

http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=GeForce+GTX+770

it looks like the 780 might be worth the extra $$ but I don't know how it works in FSX and P3D.  Oddly, to me, the 770 seems to be available with 4GB but seems that the 780 only comes with 3GB...at least so far.  Hoping to pick one up sometime before the end of March and would like some advice.

Yes, you're correct. While the 770 ships with 4GB, the 780 ONLY ships with 3GB as of Feb 2014. However - I'll point out that while I've reviewed and tested the 650, 670, 690, 770, and 780, I still personally find the 780 to be top notch unless you're going for a Titan performance-wise and in terms of benchmark. If you are getting a 780, I'd suggest the any of the overclocked editions.
