Manual solution of OOM

There are ways around the 4 GB limit for 32 bit apps running under Win x64.

You're right.  I thought about it but didn't mention it because there's no way to retrofit it into existing code without major changes.  Probably easier to go directly to 64 bit code, as both methods will break legacy addons.

We need a company to develop a 64-bit or 128-bit flight simulator. Maybe PMDG?

So why is a hack not possible?

Simply told, imagine that you have a street of houses. They have their numbers. First there are 3 houses, then 5, 8, 25, 47... and you keep making the road longer and longer. However, there is a problem. The psot office only allows for two digits in house number. So you get a house number 99... and then there is a problem. You know there is more space, you know you can build houses 100, 101, 102... but since there is no way to send bills to those houses, you first have to make the post office aware of higher adresses.

That is possible, but not easy. Some other branches, (X-Plane Street) are already using this. But your branch (FSX street) is due to close and won't be able to do this. You will be taken over by a different branch (P3D), they will do it, but they need a lot of time, and you might need to add a leading zero to all your houses (recompile the addons).

What makes people think PMDG could pull off a complete simulator? They only make aircraft for f.sake, nothing else. No scenery, no weather, no 3D engine... No people for that, in all likelihood no budget for that.

Also, why did people start talking about 128bit all of a sudden? There are no consumer processors nor OS handling 128bit in productions, nor on the horizon. 64bit is just getting common in last years. 64bit can store up to 16 BILLION gigabytes... do you think this is going to run out any soon?

(btw. it took about 7 years for x86 processors to move from 16bit to 32bit architechture, and about 19 years to move from 32bit to 64bit. That means about 40 years still until we should expect 128bit at this rate).

May as well start talking about 128 bit, this way if/when the 128bit OS is released we simmers are not behind the times like we are now. If it were not for our present VAS limit who knows what could be possible for developers to develop. Of course FSX would be history but eventually something is going to be that simulator of choice that simmers and developers flock to.

16 billion GB is nothing if a developer were to simulate and depict accurately *all* the intricate details of all major Int'l Airport all the while PMDG simulates and depicts *all* the intricate details of a real modern airliner down to every fuse. 128 bit would quickly become quite necessary and could even get to the point of not being enough. At the rate PMDG is going with the most excellent developments, I want to remove that VAS limit and let them go free to impress the world, because we know they will. For me P3D v2 runs smooth as silk at 20 FPS with max sliders anywhere in the world. I'm satisfied with 17 FPS. The point is we have the computing power and new technologies available to us for smooth performance now , but we are plagued with the looming OOM.....its always something.

If I may ask so... how do you guys propose developing in a 128bit architecture?

May as well start talking about 128 bit,

May as well start talking about buying a real airplane.

Kickstarter! :D :D

No wait, we can get government funding for that.  As long as there's a flight simmer on the review board, we're good to go.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

I wonder how/why anybody in 1980 did not make PMDG quality 777 that we have today back then. Can anybody say advancement? Can anybody say technological advancement? Or were i7 processors available in 1200 BC?

I have a great idea, Peter, Peppy, and Larry can hire their great grandchildren to develop a simulator in 64 bit,  I will pay them from the grave. By then OS's,  Assassins Creed, and Call of Duty may be at 256 bit and simmers will suffer through the OOM's or cutting back on the sliders in 32bit until then....yay!! What a wonderful concept : stagnation, I love it! LOL

Lets all stay behind the times and just enjoy simmings most beloved friend named VAS limit....that's a very good idea, who cares anyway hahahaha

I get to fly for real whenever I want, 9/11 type situations are the only kind of thing that can change this. So you all are right there is no need for me to care at all for the fellow simmer or simming.

Have fun in the computing dark ages. LOL! ROFL!

Do you have any idea at all about how computers work, Paul?

Peter, I can promise you that if we continue this conversation, you will be embarrassed and the topic will be closed, so I choose to end my part in this topic with great joy and laughter.

Correct me if I'm stating the obvious but, if we're talking 16 billion gigabytes of VAS, where is the physical ram to accommodate it going to come from?   That's a lot of gbytes and unless one can fabricate that kind of physical capacity at a affordable cost I don't know how you can do it!

Korea.

Imagine in 1980 telling people they'd have terrabyte drives and gigabytes of RAM.  My toaster probably has more raw processing power than my first computer from that time (120K floppy!).  But what can I say... 640 K ought to be enough for anyone, right?  :D

But yeah, it's a bit early to be talking about 128 bit processors, although I have no doubt that software will expand to fill it when it becomes available, and we won't understand how we lived without it.

I wrote my first thesis on a manual typewriter.....boring

In 1996, I imagined a farfetched futuristic world where you could actually have1 G of RAM instead of a 1 G hard drive

That would make FS95 rock beyond 12 fps

did it happen?

Sure, but...these are two very different orders of magnitude.  From 640K to 4Gb is a factor of 6,250.   But from 4Gb to 16bil Gb is a factor of 4,000,000,000.   That's a lot of physical ram so of course die shrink happens and other technologies, but it's just a big jump is my point.

Noel, I hope you understood what I said about 128 bit was tongue in cheek.
