March 15, 201412 yr I am surprised I couldn't find any mention of this previously. So I am wondering if I have got something wrong. In the Baron (or indeed any G1000 default aircraft) the autopilot doesn't follow the G1000 altimeter, but it seems to follow the standby altimeter instead. If I set the airfield pressure or standard pressure on the G1000 the autopilot ignores the altitude showing on the G1000 and climbs to that showing on the standby gauge! If I change the pressure on the G1000 obviously the altitude shown changes, but the autopilot doesn't climb or descend the aircraft. Only if I then set the pressure on the standby does it move the aircraft I am flying using Radar Contact and so I can't use the 'B' key as the FSX weather is often giving a different pressure to RC. Can anyone spot where I am going wrong or is this a long standing problem with FSX G1000? Thanks Nigel P.S. Even when I set the pressure and get the autopilot responding, though it descends the aircraft, the a/p display doesn't show that unless I deselect Alt and reselect it.
March 15, 201412 yr Both the G1000 and the autopilot in the default Baron are limited in their capabilities.. I notice the same problems that you mention, on my system. If you want a decent G1000 implementation, you should look at something like the Flight1 C182T. There the avionics work properly B) Bert
March 15, 201412 yr Author Bert, Thanks for that. Good to have confirmation. So I assume I am not doing anything wrong and I will need to keep setting the baro with the standby gauge. I flew again today and I am getting used to doing that. I am embarking on a round the world trip and don't have another medium GA aircraft to use yet. I would buy an add-on if I could find a good one. The Flight1 Super KingAir looks very good, but is a little large for what I need. Nigel
March 16, 201412 yr A top rated GA aircraft for around the world travel would include the RealAir Duke B60 V2.. (my personal recommendation..) Excellent execution and finish.. If you add a RealityXP GNS530, you've got it all  http://www.realairsimulations.com/home.php?page=home An inexpensive aircraft that comes with a somewhat useful G1000, is the Lionheart Kodiak. http://www.lionheartcreations.com/Kodiak.html It will take you into any airstrip (which is what it was designed for). If you get it, contact me for a G1000 upgrade.. Bert
March 16, 201412 yr Author Bert, Thanks for that, I will certainly give them a look and let you know. I must move on from the Baron to something which is more challenging. I found today (I think) that the anti-ice switches on the separate panel window don't turn on the anti-ice! Having nearly crashed again today flying from Iceland to Greenland in low temps. I found that switching the anti-ice on the main cockpit display recovered the aircraft! If I don't move away from the Baron I will at least have to find a list of the faults with it (or write one!). Nigel
March 16, 201412 yr Author Bert, I like the Duke! I had noticed it listed, but hadn't bothered to look! Now I have looked at the website and watched the YouTube video by Froogle (who I follow quite closely) I realise it fits the bill quite well. A good recommendation - thank-you. I may stay with the default GPS for the time being, but you think that the GNS530 would be a good upgrade? Thanks again Nigel P.S. Why can't I copy and paste text in this forum?
March 16, 201412 yr Nigel, if you are serious about flight simming, you will want to go to a better GPS at some time. The RXP GNS530 is a great upgrade, with a few caveats... FSX only, not P3D supported, and the author no longer provides support (but users do, on the support forum). Suggest downloading the free Garmin GNS530 Trainer and try it out.. the RXP unit uses the identical software and has the same functionality. https://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3531 Bert
March 17, 201412 yr The Garmin Trainer which is the base for the Reality-XP GNS500 does not have updates for its database of airport local procedures, etc. There has only been one or two released. I am not sure which simulation of the G1000 is used here on this twin: http://www.eaglesoftdg.com/DA42Feature%20List_SS.htm for the Diamond 42 twin. They do mention a G1000 add-in from Mindstar which I believe is this one: http://www.mindstaraviation.com/Product_G1000.html I'd see if they have a manual to download. It does state it has an updatable database from: https://www.realnavdata.com a home version for $40 single update. You might wish to consider FS Panel Studio to place gauges on any aircraft that allows add-on gauges. It is a $25 download I believe from Fight1.com. It avoids a lot of trial and error. What it does is described on its site. Think of it as an object oriented image editor. http://fspanelstudio.com/ The download version is simpler to update and be sure if you get it to backup the download and the install folder and any key modules. This way you could place the Mindstar GNS1000 on any model. FS Panel Studio couples to your image editor to modify the panel background. To be clear, i do not have the Mindstar but by spec it looks very interesting. If you wish to risk your well being with a single engine prop check out these: http://www.eaglesoftdg.com/General_Aviation.htm Cirrus SRs especially with the advanced panels.
March 17, 201412 yr Word of caution: Replacing a G1000 using FS Panel Studio is not a simple thing, and may not be possible in a variety of newer planes. No disrespect, but I wish folks would only recommend things that they have personal hands-on experience with.... Note the words from the documentation: While FS Panel Studio can be used to perform some editing of gauge placement in Virtual Cockpits, VCs are primarily implemented in the model.cfg file, which defines 3D geometry which cannot be edited in FSPS. Also, the comments about Garmin database updates are themselves somewhat out of date  Bert
March 17, 201412 yr Author Thanks all for you good advice. I am much taken with the Duke and I think I will go for that and learn the GNS 530 (thanks esp' for the training link) I am embarked on this RTW trip and started with a twin so I think I should stay with twins. I have the A2A 172 if I want to step down somewhere along the way. I will no doubt have some questions once I have got it and started flying it. Thanks again Nigel
March 17, 201412 yr Have a great flight! The Duke is a solid bird and should make for many happy hours B) Bert

March 17, 201412 yr Author Thanks Ryan, I will bear it in mind. Tho' I don't fly VATSIM or similar, just use FSX data, Radar Control and some very old charts. So new data might actually throw me out a bit. Nigel
March 17, 201412 yr Just to add to the comments above , I have the Duke B60 V2 and have recently purchased the Reality XP GNS530 and I'm enjoying every bit of it, did make some basic errors installing it by not following the instructions but Bert soon put me on the right track. great support forum. search the web for tutorial's to help you on the learning curve. bob
March 17, 201412 yr Author I have misunderstood the blurb - I thought it said the GNS530 was part of the installation. But reading again I see that it seems to say that it's 'ready' for the Reality XP GNS530! A tad misleading, as it could include allsorts of add-ons on this list! Do I assume the default FSX GPS appears? Nigel
