Conference and X-Plane 10.30

Featured Replies

When they were demonstrating it, it looked very easy to use (although it was a popup window). The only thing lacking was using the scrollwheel, so it took much longer to program in the route.

Do you mean it was a popup triggered within the X-Plane UI?

If so, I'm surprised to hear this will be part of the standard equipment and UI, in the past the devs have been adamantly against popups and scrollwheels (looks like at least the latter is still in effect...) because it takes you out of the sim's realism and "immersion". Never mind that in real life you don't fly heavy metal without a copilot doing half the stuff while you're flying the plane, or that most simmers only have a single screen and can't see out the window while zoomed in to adjust instruments (or you pause the sim to do it... now *there's* some realism for you!), so many of us really do need some immersion-breaking UI aids.

Yes ^ this.....  at some point, especially in big iron one has to realize you're doing it all by yourself....  I commonly use A/P for this very purpose... if I had hardware and a radio stack and MCP etc I'd probably  do more hand flying....  even GA gets tricky with just a joystick in the right hand while I'm also right handed using clickspots... can be quite difficult to get the tiniest little spot clicked aRGH!

Then think about the addons which require you to glance down (King air, Saab etc - with A/P and PFD controls on the center lower pedestal).... without TIR I'd be totally screwed... even with that it can be adventurous during online flying like Pilot Edge where I'm constantly working.

The key with online is to get EVERYTHING taken care of is as much advance as you can.

Any Flight Sim Conferences in North America this year?  I am due for a golf trip - I mean sim convention.

Actually, I don't know. What I remember was him saying that it's all editable in Plane Editor, and he was using the default Cessna 172 with a popup window (pretty much like the RealityXP units).

The demo consisted of him programming in an approach and clicking through various screens, all of which will be familiar to anyone who has used a GNS430. All looked very easy to use and fluid, and I'm really pleased that this will be available for free in 10.30.

Ben also mentions he will be releasing a 10.30 timeline in a few days...Woohooo

I’ll post a bit on 10.30 scheduling in a few days.

Were they using or did they talk about any of the art changes we've all been tinkering with recently?

No surprisingly. There was nothing new to report that we didn't already know about to some degree.  In fact, most of the exhibitors were using vanilla installs with vanilla scenery. I only remember seeing one group who were using Orbx stuff.

I noted that the PC Magazine site has a write up on the Oculus Rift DK2.  Those who are interested might find some information there.

Wish someone took a few videos from the conference.

I took lots of pictures using an iPhone camera  . However, there really wasn't much to see. Most people on these forums have better setups than what was being shown by some exhibitors, and the people here are certainly more knowledgable (and interested in flight simulation). There should be an AVSIM conference in Europe, that would be worth attending.

I'll try and throw up a few later on my blog (www.world2xplane.com). The slideshows and talks are all in German, and Philip didn't show X-Plane during the presentation as he couldn't get it to work on the projector, so it was the same screenshots seen on Ben's blog. Aerosoft filmed lots of the event, and I saw somebody interviewing Philip about the OR (In German), so I'd expect a video to surface somewhere in the next few days.

Thanks Andras

That'll be the guys I saw filming the event. Not many people turned up, probably because of the fantastic weather that weekend. The museum itself was fantastic and very much worth a visit.
