There's a reason people in the software industry want people to have ITIL and PMP Certs when in project planning roles.  There's a lot that goes into the decision-making that really isn't common knowledge.

These are nonsense certificates, purely for the benefit of the certification body that make a fortune selling them. You only have to look at all the big security breaches in IT to see that none of these certificates are actually any good. The heads of the teams that had the big breaches held all these "big name" certificates, and for what? They clearly failed at the task, despite being "certified".

It's better to know what you're doing, than to have a piece of paper that makes you think you know what you're doing.

Best regards,

Robin.

I don't think you understand what ITIL and PMP is about...

Really? They are all the same!

Here is the website about ITIL: http://www.itil-officialsite.com/Qualifications/ITILQualificationScheme.aspx

Here is the site about PMP: http://www.pmi.org/Certification/Project-Management-Professional-PMP.aspx

Heard of CISSP? https://www.isc2.org/CISSP/Default.aspx

CAP? https://www.isc2.org/cap/default.aspx

All the same. Pay for a piece of paper that is really worth little. You'd do better to go to University and study computer engineering. Far more beneficial.

Yes, but she'll have a degree at the end of it! That is far better!

Just imagine how much worse IT screw-ups might be without such qualifications in place.

Such software quality management schemes aren't worthless, but they don't guarantee IT project success either. Large IT projects have a capacity to go spectacularly wrong however well run they are and no matter how many computer engineering degrees the designers may have. The problem is they might create a false sense of security, a kind of Volvo car driver mentality. As in "my car has passed all these safety tests, so I don't need to worry about crashing it".

Well, that just underlines my point, you don't understand what these are all about.

I think it's rather fair to say you don't really understand what those certifications are all about, to be honest...

Really? Tell me, if these certs are worth the $$$, why so many major IT security screw-ups by those who have these certs out the eyeballs?

EDIT: The other thing I find rediculous is I was an *exhibitor* at a major IT security exhibition a few years back, and if I had one of these certs, I could count attending the exhibition as a visitor towards the requirements of renewal of the certificate. Why? How does attending a trade show actually help with understanding anything security related? Answer: it doesn't.

So... I'll say again: they are not worth the $$$.

Best regards,

Robin.
