Why are Americans obsessed with missing plane?

Featured Replies

The seemingly total lack of coordination in the investigation amazes me. The military radar should have detected the plane off course even if the transponder was turned off. They must not have a very good defensive alerting system. The fact that the US SOSUS anti-submarine detection system either did not detect any splash or it was kept under raps is suspicious. The Malaysians are either stupid or they are covering up something. Thank God the Australians took up the lead. They seem credible.

I pray for the families.

That's my two cents! Bob..

Does the SOSUS network actually cover the southern Indian ocean? Most everything I have ever seen about it talks about covering the Atlantic and Pacific, as those are the routes that Soviet subs would have used to approach the US or to cut off supplies being sent to Europe. The southern Indian ocean, on the other hand, is basically out of the way of just about everything. It's also a long ways out of the way for hiding a SSBN and increases the time its missiles would take to reach the US. The map at the top of the page below is a good visualization of shipping routes around the world.

One report indicated that the military did notice the plane, but didn't think it was a threat and didn't do much about it. Sending up a few fighters for a visual identification would have been a great idea, however, this never happened.

The Malaysians do appear to be very disorganized. Whether this is intentional or just from poor organization, isn't really clear.

Hi. You are 100% right about SOSUS. My mistake. I thought it was worldwide. I still think the Malaysians are covering up something.  Bob.

I went to a party last night and not one person mentioned it! CNN has been embarrassing in their coverage. I even reverted to watching FOX for a while.

Maturity comes with a price - confronting reality!

I don't think "Americans" are "obsessed" with MH370. I think CNN is. There is a significant difference between the two. CNN's continuing flatulence over the subject have made me take up alternative news sources.

As a worldwide network, their influence scares me.

Now here's a new conspiracy theory - The disappearance of MH370 was funded by CNN to bolster worldwide ratings   . It has to be the only explanation for milking this sorry episode in such a headlining way. Remember that James Bond movie?

Thanks to CNN, I have opted to find more alternate sources as well, like Al Jazeera and BBC news.

Welcome back to the real world !! It's great to see Al Jazeera finally finding a foothold in the US and people there realising that it is not the propaganda channel it was made out to be.

I guess that is where I am indeed very lucky living in such a small country - our news comes from all over the world and tends to be a little more balanced ......  (I hope)  :Nail Biting:

THis one always made me laugh...Chris invokes a war between Australia and Hong Kong out of an accord to boost news ratings, similar concept:

I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me

It's all the result of the creation of the 24 hour news channel. They're broadcasting 24/7 and need something - anything - to talk about. Hence when a significant newsworthy event like MH370 occurs they will run with it, and run with it, and run with it, and run with it...

...ad nauseum (quite literally).

The BBC's news is also pretty poor. I'm British, grew up with the BBC - it's very much part of the fabric of British society. Beginning around 2006 I started to notice a creeping politicisation of their news coverage. This is highly naughty as they are supposed to be a public service, they are funded from what is essentially a TV tax levied on every household in the UK (which it is a criminal offence not to pay), and their political neutrality is supposed to be protected. However, if you look carefully you'll see they are anything but neutral.

The BBC as a publically funded corporation is in growing trouble at the moment. Lots of attention has been drawn to the BBC's profligate spending. Thanks to them having a captive audience of over 60 million people who are compelled to pay, the BBC is literally swimming in money and they throw it about like confetti. This - along with the growing politicisation of their broadcasting - has been noticed, and the pressure on them is steadily growing. The license fee is an anachronism and will be abolished in the next 10-20 years, of that I am certain. Once that happens the BBC will have to sink or swim just like any other broadcaster.
