Why are Americans obsessed with missing plane?

Featured Replies

I don't think "Americans" are "obsessed" with MH370. I think CNN is. There is a significant difference between the two. CNN's continuing flatulence over the subject have made me take up alternative news sources.

I think that all people, regardless of country, love a mystery, bad or good.

As somebody who acquired a fear of flying after AF447, this event has left me both curious and further pusillanimous regarding flying in general.

CNN has lightened up a bit on their coverage.  Instead of giving 23 hours 30 minutes per day to the missing plane coverage, I'd say they're down to just around 21 hours per day now

Good thing I do not know what that means, else I might feel the same way toward flying!

Yeah, it got to the point my palms were sweating when i encountered turbulence in the NGX.  B)

It's long distance flights, i went up in a Dragon Rapide at Duxford last year and loved it, but put me on a 777 over the Bay of Bengal or the Chengdu Plateau and just the thought of mild turbulence...

Has CNN figured out how to spell "Bowing" yet???

PPL - Instrument Rating

You know the company in Canada that had the 777 sim fired the trainer Martin Savage was flying with for looking unprofessional.  Those pieces were the most entertaining of the whole CNN coverage.  CNN was not my favorite source of news but for the last 30 days my viewership of that network has been the lowest it's ever been.

CNN has now become the standard for "Tabloid Cable News". From this point forward, they will hyper analyze, over dramatize and milk every major News story that comes across the wire.

Unfortunately, this type of Journalism will eventually become the rule, rather than the exception... regardless of the medium.

CNN's rating skyrocketed initially. It is all about ratings, of course and they are in dire need of viewers....

But the 'black hole theory' and some so called 'aviation experts' really gave that coverage a black eye in my opinion.

Aviation enthusiasts and the flying public want to know what happened. This has nothing to do with being obsessed. We have to make sure that a jetliner will never ever disappear like that again and 'we' should use the latest technology available to prevent that.

That is what fascinates me.

Most of what is said on the Internet may be the same thing they shovel on the regular basis at the local barn.

It sounds like CNN is the broadcast equivalent of the Daily Express.

Surely not everybody was kung fu fighting.

Almost every story on the CNN web page is "BREAKING NEWS", with the corresponding huge red border graphics and huge fonts.   Talk about cry wolf.

I read that they achieved about 85% higher ratings as a result of their saturation coverage of MH370.  But I will never look at some of the "serious" journalists the same way again, especially Richard Quest and Don Lemon.

Thanks to CNN, I have opted to find more alternate sources as well, like Al Jazeera and BBC news.   I'm actually surprised at how turned off I am at the coverage, even the simulator scenarios, on CNN.   I was already on flightsim burnout prior to the story, but MH370 pretty much exasperated the situation for me.
