May 6, 201412 yr And here's the most important improvement. P3d continues to be improved and updated.
May 7, 201412 yr Here is a list of items/features FSX does NOT have: But "apart from DX11 what has improved over FSX" there is: •Updated SDK (with VS support and more recent versions of 3DMax for better modeling)•SimDirector •Integrated SimConnect (now a managed part of P3D not a separate install) •Continued development of the product Gerry Howard
May 7, 201412 yr Moderator Someone should make a sticky in the P3D forum ... I get asked this same question 100's of times and it seems to be a common question (even when asked in a somewhat pre-judged manner). DONE! See top of forum list. Fr. May 7, 201412 yr Excellent... really helpful indeed. Do you think in each bullet point, can be an explanation to what that feature does, how to set up to maximise performance verses visuals etc?
May 7, 201412 yr DONE! See top of forum list. How did Rene manage to get a post in? And his post is not about P3D content but about an add-on for P3D ... if he has a issues with PMDG not being available for P3D, he really send that comment PMDG's way (they've been pretty clear why it's not available for LM yet). Oh Rene Cheers, Rob.
May 7, 201412 yr Are you sure about FSX not having all those water reflections Rob?... I thought FSX could reflect everything. BTW.. have you noticed all the 'Refraction' entries along with the 'Reflection' entries in the P3D cfg?... they are all set to 0/OFF by default and switching them all to one seems to do nothing, so I wonder why the entries are there.
May 7, 201412 yr Are you sure about FSX not having all those water reflections Rob?... I thought FSX could reflect everything. I think he means that it's possible to select each setting individually instead of a slider that keeps adding more things. It is true that FSX can reflect everything at Max 2.x water though.
May 7, 201412 yr Author If you want to turn on all those features that are NOT in FSX, then you will need more CPU/GPU processing power. I don't need all those features (for examples all reflections and all shadows) but many of them would be very interesting for example volumetric fog and wave animations and improved cockpit shadows. And of course getting something better than FSX would be the very reason for buying P3D. Regarding the list, Tesselation. Isn't that something that enabled would increase performance over FSX since load is put on the video card? What is meant by 'NoShadow Flagged Content'? Apart from this is it only in graphics and better memory management things has improved? What about realism? I mean P3D is supposed to be used for training and not entertainment.
May 7, 201412 yr I think he means that it's possible to select each setting individually instead of a slider that keeps adding more things Ah, okay... good point
May 7, 201412 yr Are you sure about FSX not having all those water reflections Rob Probably should have been more accurate ... you can't select individual reflection types. What is meant by 'NoShadow Flagged Content'? From the testing I've done with this setting it appears to apply mostly to 3rd party content ... for example FlyTampa fences and lamp posts (St.Maarten) will show shadows when I have this option checked. From what I can see, it will override (ignore) 3rd party desire to NOT have shadows on certain objects ... in some cases this looks good, in other cases it causes issues especially with some airport taxiways where you'll get strange shadows from objects that appear to just be a 2D plane with single alpha channel texture placed on top of taxiway surface ... but it'll cast a shadow if this option is checked creating dark mysterious shadow patches on the taxiway. So using this option is a little hit and miss pending on how the 3rd party developer build's their objects. Cheers, Rob. I mean P3D is supposed to be used for training and not entertainment. You lost me there? Since when has training not required as much realism as possible? The more realistic, the better the training -- that defines simulation. Light (HDR, Shadows, etc.) is all about providing a more realistic environment ... be it military or commercial or private. Cheers, Rob.

Light (HDR, Shadows, etc.) is all about providing a more realistic environment ... be it military or commercial or private. Indeed!... I really do not get why some think these added graphics features are some sort of shiny trinkets that mean nothing. The more realistic the visual and atmospheric environment is, the more realistic the overall flying experience becomes. These things are not being added for fun, or to compete with the video games market, but are to make it more like the conditions real pilots will find, in the real world.

I think he's talking about the flight dynamics, which have not changed since FSX.
May 7, 201412 yr I think he's talking about the flight dynamics, which have not changed since FSX. True, but the door for any 3rd party Aircraft provider is wide open if they want to do their own flight dynamics ... IMHO, that's where the flight dynamics should be ... but this was true for FSX also - see MJC Q400 as an example. Cheers, Rob.
May 7, 201412 yr Author I think he's talking about the flight dynamics, which have not changed since FSX. Yes and one thing I would like to have is better damage modeling. Another thing sloped runways like they have in XPlane. But I think thats planned to be incorporated in P3D? In 2.3?
May 7, 201412 yr Another thing sloped runways like they have in XPlane. But I think thats planned to be incorporated in P3D? In 2.3? I've landed on a few sloped and bumpy dirt runways but I haven't noticed any paved ... but I thought Orbx released some airports (or will be releasing) with runways that were slopped so long as you used a 1m Mesh? I honestly haven't tested this out, it may already be in 2.2? Cheers, Rob.
