I want to love X-plane 10 but so many things to hate

It's not too bad. My favourite at the moment for medium-heavies is the A320neo, excellent virtual cockpit, sounds and systems.

Yes and no.  The FSX ATC is sub par but it does have AI traffic of all sorts.

 

The other issue is that I have alot of $$ invested (sunk?) into FSX (see my sig) and, even if payware options exist for XPX, it's simply not in my budget.

I would also like to use X-Plane more, but I drag 2D panels onto other monitors when flying and you simply can't do that in x-Plane.

Re the gps.  It would be nice if they can take their code and put it on the iPad as an xplane add-on. 

 

    They seem to be able to move their code to the iOS platform reasonably easily.   That along with adding the data exports would be a really nice addition.

Love the SIG  Get Real! Get X-Plane!   OMG LOL!!!!   Should say Get real Fly Real!     I fly real planes, sorry all the sims fall short, and I own and fly all 3 and you wouldn't like my answer to which one is closest.

Yes because we are all in the financial or health position to fly planes. Arrogant answer in my opinion and does nothing for this post. Off you trot and fly your real planes and we will stick with our virtual ones.

From the psychological aspect, I observe a very interesting phenomenon here (although annoying for non-psychologists): a “very special species” of a forum (let’s say group A) are trickling from time to time in a subforum where usually users of a different product (let’s say group B ) are communicating and helping each other. As I am not a professional psychologist - not even hobby psychologist, I never was able to fathom the reasons for such action (let’s call it “generating bad atmosphere”) from group A. Possibly it helps to feel better?

Strangely, you won’t find users of group B in the subforum of group A to generate bad atmosphere (e.g. with “OOM”, “stutters”, “low fps”, “not sustainable/no 64 bit”, “CTD”,  “deficient flight modeling”, “2D billboard clouds”, “blurry textures”, “ineffective UI”, “poor winter simulation”, you name it). I don’t know why it is this way - probably because group B isn’t in a sore need of it?

I would be very glad, if someone could explain to me the above mentioned phenomenon (and “non-phenomenon” respectively), as I twisted my mind like hell, but wasn’t able to find the solution. Am I on the right path with my above assumption “Possibly it helps to feel better?” I don’t want to extend the discussion – a simple answer (my suggestion is “yes” ) would be sufficient.

As it was already said (and proven by reality), it is absolutely superfluous to start such discussions again and again, as it will lead to nothing - except generating bad atmosphere and wasting everyone’s time. There is so much more out there, what is worth spending time on it - e.g. reading a book, gardening, (real) flying, drinking a glass of good wine, visiting friends, sunbathing (don’t forget the sun blocker), fu..ing , … . Why not starting right NOW?

Personally, I prefer the XP UI - especially when it comes to setting up controller axis and button assignments. I have the CH Products yoke, throttle quadrant and rudder pedals.

 

In FSX, I have to go to a separate page in the setup menu for each controller to set the axis and button assignments, whereas in XP, all the axes from multiple controllers can be seen on one menu page - it doesn't differentiate which specific controller a specific axis comes from. Makes it very easy to assign axis functions - just move the axis to be assigned, then look for which status bar moves - then select the particular axis function from a drop-down list next to the axis.

 

Likewise, I find it easier to assign buttons in XP, again because all possible assignments are right there on one page - not differentiated by controller. You just press the button you want to assign, then click a button to assign a function.

 

In FSX, by contrast, you have to scroll through a long list of possible functions for each button - which can be a PITA if you are not exactly sure what actual name FSX uses for the particular function you want to assign. In XP you can see all of the possibilities on one page at the same time.

 

Granted, there are some features of the UI that could stand improvement - like the current options on the rendering setup screen for the amount of detail for things like trees, road traffic etc. More precise descriptions for some of these options would be preferred to the somewhat juvenile-sounding options currently present like "lots" or "insane".

That is the simple crux of this kind of debate. Not agains you personally Helo_Head but there is a motivation when one is still on the FS-X side to want to rationalize the amount of $$$ invested in the system. It creates a gut feeling in which you don't want the other sim to be  just as good OR beter because of that invested amount. Its great that you are honest enough to mention this yourself.
