Pmdg No Rain Effect On Windshield?

Featured Replies

I would like to automatically defecate in my pants in an emergency. Authentic for sure.

Amazing to me how threads digress in this forum. What was the original post again? Can't remember, too much thread jacking going on.

You are right. But in the end most of the time it is all about your favorite simulator aircrafts  B)  and the possibility of having precipitation properly simulated for them.

The conversation between "willywonka", "scandinavian13" and me was already "a bit" off topic but at least about heavy rain and turbulence...

The post of "nathanpinard" made me smile as it was quite "disarming". In Germany some people call this "low-level-limbo". The funny thing about it: you never know if there will be someone able to lower the level even further...

Personally, the fact that I fly from the cockpit, leads me to prefer effects that are visible in the cockpit, rather than the wheel well.

... like EICAS messages/warnings/alerts and the synoptic displays?

What happened to AVSIM

Just to put this issue of "VC Rain" into better perspective, understand that the "FS9 VC Rain" feature uses "Chained Animations" meaning that there are a total of thirty-two (32) textures that must be sequentially displayed whenever it is "raining" in the sim. This "feature" is not officially supported in FSX, but it can be enabled only if the developer cripples their project by compiling an FS9 model rather than a true FSX model.

There is a set of sixteen textures for a parked aircraft, and another set of sixteen for a moving aircraft.

Each of the textures have to be assigned to a separate set of "window polys" and each set is shown/hidden as required while the animation chain is playing. This means thirty-two sets of the "window polygons" in addition to the "no-rain" "window polygons."

In a large aircraft where there are many "windows" this can rapidly spin out of control and increase the number of polygons in an interior model to the point where the model itself cannot even be compiled without sacrificing some other, much more essential objects in the model. Also, since they would be limited to using the FS9 exporter/compiler, many of the FSX exclusive new features would no longer be available!

Now there is a way to implement something similar to the FS9 "chained animation system" and be allowed to use the FSX exporter/compiler, but it would require the developer to code their own, unique system, which frankly is a massive PITA.

This folks is the simple and bare truth of the matter, and why developers make the decision not to include this very expensive (in terms of performance) "feature..." B)

How then Bill, do they manage to do it both in train sim and Omsi. The FS9 way? (the graphics in both are in appearance much higher than fs9 or fsx)

In train sim the rain even trickles down the windscreen and Omsi also has windscreen washers!

It does seem to me rather poor that a fundamental weather rendition was effectively ditched for FSX. It's rather like saying realism is 50% maximum. i.e. you can have 100% realism here but 0% there!

I honestly do not know as I've never invested in either one of them. I do know however that Euro Truck Sim 2 uses DX10 procedural shaders to create the effects, including 'wiping' the rain quite realistically. Of course SCS is using their own in-house prism3D sim engine, which obviously makes their job easier. B)

Haha yea, that was partly my fault. I figured that since we're already talking about weather.... :P

Shaders. Remember that FSX is built on an old engine and just about scratched the surface of its shader possibilities when it was released. Even the DX10 stuff was just about the beginning (but obviously ran out of time before it got any good).

Also, OMSI and TS are more modern titles built on more modern engines depicting a local area and thus are not comparable to FSX.

Certainly the rain wipe in Omsi is the most realistic.

Let's not forget the level of complexity between Planes, Trains and Omni Buses, the T7 compared to the Train sim is liking comparing a Timex to a Rolex. Maybe if PMDG gave us the option to remove the Cabin textures it might be enough to add Windscreen Rain Effect. Just talking out my a**, don't really know what I am talking about.

haha - yeah, it's more to do with animations than textures...
