Oculus rift.

Featured Replies

My DK2 oculus rift arrived  four days ago.   Since then I haven't played anything that uses a screen.   My main simulations are flying and racing.

So far only a couple of titles have rift support that works with the new DK2, one racing simulator and DCS World.   I will leave out the racing for this forum but my impressions are pretty much the same for that as they are for flying.   Brilliant :)

I can't wait for x-plane to get the rift support going that they have planned.  It really changes they way you feel in a simulator.   Currently the dev kit is OK for VFR but you would have some issues with IFR because of the resolution.   Having said that it is probably easier in a civilian aircraft than some of the many small gauges in a military one.

Coming in for approach and landing with the runway life size and the same feeling you have landing a real aircraft is great.

It needs a bit more resolution for the consumer release to get the masses but even as it is there is a great feeling of immersion impossible any other way.   Triple screens with 3d don't match it, at all.

Really looking forward to oculus on x-plane.

FYI, I don't fly the heavies, mostly VFR, some IFR and what can't map to my hotas I use voice commands to control so not being able to see my keyboard is no problem for me.

sorry, should have read your whole post.

No problem, I didn't see what you wrote but assume I was a bit off topic.  I posted here rather than the hardware as x-plane is specifically the only civ sim that is going to be supporting it in the short term and it's the civ sim I use,

i was asking how you see your keyboard etc but you already mentioned about that being a non issue

Oh,I am not a mind reader then.  My wife tells me that, I guess I don't need avsim to confirm it :)

I use the thrust master warthog so I have a lot of buttons at the ready and some thing I dont have mapped or use infrequently I would use voice commands like saying 'Landing gear' or 'instrument lights'  etc.

Of course the mouse still works for in game cockpits and I never seem to have any issue finding the mouse, I put it in the same place all the time.

sounds like fun looking forward to the consumer version of OR

Just got my DK2 also cant wait for native 3d in xpx......

The level of immersion is just awesome....

has anyone tried using a LEAP Motion device ? You can setup a pretty simple mouse replacement with it. You should be able to use it pretty easy and would be alot more immersive, i imagine ?

Jason, if you have any interest in space combat games, "Elite Dangerous" is in a Beta phase now that's stable enough to enjoy (with some patience for inevitable bugs here and there). It has Rift support, and full customization for HOTAS rigs so you don't have to take your hands off the controls.

People using the Rift say it's amazing in that game, although not quite there yet for general use due to text resolution issues. I'm flying it with TrackIR, and decided to wait for the consumer version. The buy-in for Standard Beta is a little pricey at around $75, but if you like space games at all, this one's a blast, even in its present state.

I hope they don't wait until XPXI to implement it.

I had the pleasure of trying this at a flight sim conference, and although it was the older version, the effect is really quite nice (and nauseating :-)). They were supposed to be getting this support out for this in 10.30, but I'm guessing this has been pushed back.

What I'm curious about is how to interact with the cockpit when wearing the headset. It really is quite difficult to orient yourself, so although this would be amazing for VFR flights, I'm curious how it could be used in tubeliners with lots of switches.

Paraffin, I do have ED.  It looks really good in the rift.   The text is actually quite readable but far away objects could do with more resolution.

One thing is that the blacks are very, very black.  Much better than any lcd or plasma I have seen.   In DCS, night flying is something else again.   It can be very dark but still have very good contrast with dark clouds and other objects.   Clarity you couldn't get on a monitor.

Tony,  Some things in the rift are not good experiences.  It often happens when frame rates are low.  When they are high the experience is very good and I can stay in the rift for a long time with no issues.    If frame rates are low I wouldn't give people more than a few minutes before it's a problem.

You can push buttons with a mouse.  If you are currently using the mouse for everything and not the keyboard then things shouldn't be too much different for you.  If you use the keyboard and want to continue to then that is a problem.

I find that if you are not flying a heavy with frequent use of a flight computer that a good hotas and some voice control does everything for you, otherwise the mouse is still good.  I don't have any issues putting my hand on the mouse when I can't see it.   At worst I put my hand beside it still touching part of it.

Thanks Jason, I was worried it would be quite hard to use. I also do make use of the keyboard, but less since I started using helicopters and more simple aircraft. I wish they were easy to get here in Poland, but at the moment I'm waiting for them to be generally available.

This! The best purchase I made once it went to standard beta. Absolutely love the franchise and the product.
