Help with cold and dark on the 24B

Featured Replies

I understand that the 24B needs its own unique c/d startup, but I am having no luck setting one up.

I have loaded the fsx default air trike, then switched to the 24B.  I then turn everything off:  batts, fuel pumps, lights, every switch is in the off position, and the engines spool down to zero rpm (although the exh temp never quite goes to zero.

I have then noticed that a number of indicator lights stay on, the FUS TANK green indicator for example.

I save the new cold and dark aircraft (having changed to my home airport of KHPN) and then close FSX, and reboot the computer.

When I then try to restart FSX and bring up my new c/d 24B, it loads with engines running at idle, but everything else off:  all switches, etc., are right where I left them, but the engines are running.  What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,

Justin Friedland

I am having this same issue.   This may be a bug in that the in that every time you load one of the Lear's or your cold and dark save the jet pumps are turned on and the engines are idling.   In my case everything else is off so I just turn off these switches and wait for the engines to stop and I now have my cold and dark.

First of all, change your "default flight" from the silly Trike to a real aircraft, such as the C172.

I've lost count of the number of times I've emphasized that the "default flight" file stores up to twenty-two additional parameters than a "regular flight" file. The "Trike" is missing far too many aircraft systems to be useful as a "default flight."

Whenever you load any aircraft in FSX/P3D, the "default flight" file is read first to load the stored parameters, then the aircraft you have selected is loaded and any parameters that are not already initialized from reading the "default flight" file are added to the simulator.

This is precisely why I claim that ACES really screwed the pooch when they decided to make the "Trike" the default flight!

Load the C172. Move it to whatever airport you've decided to call 'home' and position it in some parking spot. Shut everything down if you want "cold and dark", then SAVE this situation and make sure to check the box that says "Make this flight the default flight."

Thanks for the help - I can successfully fire up the engines now, but I'm finding that when I do the thrust from the first engine is enough the move the a/c even with the park brakes on. Any ideas on how this can be fixed?

I have a similar problem (in P3D).  I start with the default F22 at Langley, engines running.  I switch to the Lear, shut everything off and wait for the engines to spool down.  I recheck that every switch is off, do a visual inspection to ensure the turbines have stopped and save the flight.  When I load it  either one or both engines are running (with batteries off).  Occasionally it is cold and dark but then the engines will spool up but not light (after which the battery goes dead.

This should not be that complicated.  I have build 1.1

If anyone is still having issues with Cold and Dark, Lionheart has a couple of Cold and dark flight files available on the product page to download.

  • 1 month later...

I got the cold and dark files downloaded.

>>> Why are there two cold and dark flights to choose from?

Also, the instructions say:

"Use Pure C/D's only from running flights. Always!"

>> What is this meaning?
Is it like Bill mentioned (post #3) to have the Default flight defined as the Cessna with engines running or NOT?

I was initially thinking it meant to load the LJ24B with engines running.
So, I would assume the default flight must also have the engines running?

*************************************************
FSX INSTALLATION:
Place these files into your My Documents/Flight Simulator X folder.
>> Ok.

1. Start up Flight Simulator X and click 'Load'.
>>> Ok, at this point no default flight is loaded.

2. Look for the two Learjet saved flight files that the word 'pure' in the title.
>>> Ok, found them

3. Select and you will find a saved cold and dark state flight.
>> which one to select?

4. Each feature a different Learjet.
>> I do not know what this means?

Lastly, I only have two throttle axis assigned and calibrated in FSUIPC for LJ24B.

I read here:

Also, even though the Lear does not have mixture controls, if you have hardware mixture controls make sure both the left and right are full rich or use the keyboard shortcut for mixture to full rich.

Am I supposed to assign 2 prop and two mixture axis for this aircraft?

Hi Vaughan -

#3 - either one - each uses a different livery  <-- also answers #4

I use FSUIPC for all my assignments - I assign the throttles and mixture controls. When time comes to shut down, I pull the mixture which spools down the engines. Then off the batteries and switches.

No problems.

Ok, thanks for the follow up.

These Cold and dark flights take me to KICT

I just got the RXP-Garmin set up in the VC, did a cold and dark start .. rebooted PC then did a short flight.

I do not have mixture axis set up.

I got the engines started using this procedure:

*********************************************************

Note : I use Flight One's default flight set up ... it uses Trike engines running.

Started FSX

Selected the LJ24B

fly now

now at Friday Harbor engines running

Park brake set

Loaded Pure cold and dark flight

now I am at KICT cold and dark

Moved to KDTW

Started engines ok..

Next I just finished a short flight  .. KDTW-KCLE

I just started this one with the LJ's engines already running.

During the flight the right engine shut down ... I did an air start

Later the left engine shut down ... I did an air start

I have no idea what caused the shutdowns?

Also: you mentioned "I pull the mixture which spools down the engines."

I thought I read to shutdown engines you shut off fuel pumps?

I looked at the manual  .. it mentions .. turn the Jet Pumps OFF ... I have not down a shutdown so don't know for sure.

"I have no idea what caused the (engine) shutdowns?"

I re-read the product "insights" .

Now I recall I had Active Realism turned on.

I will pay more attention on the next flight!
