Thanks for all your comments friends, all of which are accurate/pertinent/relevant.

you probably wrote your intitial comment with tongue firmly in cheek

Indeed I did. ^_^

But also out of frustration. Several retailers do have monthly promotions where 20%, 40% and occasionally even 50% discounts tempt buyers to open their wallets.  But even 9-10 year legacy titles never get down to the 75%-95% off commonly available elsewhere.

In the end 'you pays your money, and you make your choice.'  I have ... with over 1000 payware entries in my FS9 cfg, and enjoyed myself enormously as well as learning not to be dangerous up there.  Sometimes though when lining up another IAN approach in my iFly the thought occurs I could have had my PPL by now with the money/time expended.  Drat.

When you are within the industry and also a qualified pilot you tend to see things from a different perspective. In as much that one is after a good flight model rather than pretty clouds. Flight simulation in the real world is all about practising cockpit drills not about I'm so mad about the colours of the clouds.

Another freebie btw is voicechecklist!

I disagree with the sentiments of the OP.

The single only FS products that I have ever deemed inappropriately overpriced, are the Japanese airport addons from Wing Creations.     ..... so I don't buy them.

Easy solution to an easy problem

Every other addon I have ever bought, I think I payed a fair price for, for the development efforts and skills involved, and the pleasure I've had.

Unfortunately, life ............. is expensive.

I think when you consider development costs, especially with the high end addons, the retail costs are more than fair.  Renting and flying an actual airplane to record data and such has to be a very expensive undertaking...this rental cost also goes up considerably with the rise in complexity of the airplane.  Compare renting a Piper Seminole to a Piper Cherokee and you'll see what I mean.  Factor in other R&D costs, travel costs, programming time, testing time...etc.

50 bucks for a highly detailed GA plane modeled to near 'check ride' level is an absolute bargain compared to the real thing.

If you think it is too much, there are plenty of wonderful freeware titles available.

Cheers

TJ

with over 1000 payware entries in my FS9 cfg

Therefore I am not afraid to spend money ... I have very few freeware titles, mostly Russian/Chinese airports.

Oh well ...

I have a huge amout of freeware stuff, both planes & scenery. There are some better than payware stuff out there & I REALLY believe in supporting the freeware guys. They are the core of our hobby &, itf they spend time & effort developing something interesting, I give my support & download. Yes, there are some dogs out there, but they are dumped.

There are quite a few payware planes in my collection, but only if I cannot find anything else out there.

BTW, I'm into the low 'n slows, not tube liners, so PMDG is not on my wish/want list.

Being fleeced? By now, we should be aware of what goes on with the payware guys & their marketing practices (stores as well).

So, don't blame the adverts & marketing practices & take responsibilty for your choices!

And remember this : one nice evening in the pub may cost you more than RealAirs Duke V2, which will last for several years. But, as said allready : the choise is yours !

Quite a few developers have actually moved their payware products to free are after a period of time - Iris comes straight to mind.

Also keep in mind other developers that fund products before even launching a final commercial product are asking significantly more for add-ons. Star Citizen just bringing a salvage ship to market for $US 350 and about to bring a luxury cruiser to market for $600 which buyers won't see in the currently pre-alpha versions for some time.

There's also Elite:Dangerous who let you join their Alpha development cycle for $US 200. I realise these prices are to help development, but isn't that why we also pay the prices we do for the add-ons we want to see in FS? We're supporting a revenue stream for add-on developers to keep using their time and their skills for the extra aircraft and sceneries we want to see in our sims ...

What has that got to do with what TJ or I said in the posts above?    Neither comment alluded that you don't like spending money, but the whole gist of your OP is a moan about the cost of FS addons is it not?

Perhaps you just prefer people violently agreeing with you, than giving an opposing viewpoint.....

That's exactly what it comes down to ......... well said.

True about the ppl but would you have ever got your hands on a 737NG or a T7 in real world? And I remind  myself I  couldn't even rent a PA180 to bounce around the traffic pattern more then once a month on my budget but I can fire up my A2A to hearts content. And you know, compared to a lot of common past times such as fishing, hunting ,golf, it's not so expensive. You work hard treat yourself.

Vic green

I pay for Carendo or A2a planes never felt in my vc was being ripped off. They spend 6 months to year creating those planes. Get freeware scenery for airports or create as I know zmod, sketchup and getting better with paint net too . I don't play shooting games anyways just flight sims, monopoly, trucking sim.
