Around the world in an old Tupolev

While the oversea flights get more and more boring, the hardest ones are still to come. However, meanwhile there's still holiday feeling on the islands.

What an epic fail: Tahiti NTAA to Mururoa NTTX. In fact, this airport is closed. Did I think somebody did leave some barrels of Jetfuel at the devastated island?

However, this airport set a strange record: it's the first (and probably also the last) airport of my journey without scenery add-on, it only has an Afcad (and this is curious enough for a closed one).

Part two: Approach to Isla de Pascua. (There was too much time between posting the first pictures from en-route and approach.)

Where did you get the Easter Island scenery from?

Hi Dillon,

look for "SCIP" in the library (FS2004 sceneries) and you will find a compilation by David "Opa" Marshall which is to combine with the airport scenery "scip_08.zip" at flightsim.com.

It's a little bit oldfashioned but still nice.

The vessel is, btw, probably from the static ships package discussed here some time ago.

Cheers, Harald

A peaceful evening at Mataveri Intl.:

150216Tu134SCIP1_zpsaad26b0d.jpg

By the way, I planned my flight to Santiago de Chile today. With more than 2,000 nautical miles, it is slightly too long for an IFR flight to Santiago with this plane. There is, however, an airfield at Isla San Felix (SCFX), but this means 200 miles more with uncertainty of fuel availability. So I decided to take a route via Isla Robinson Crusoe SCIR (Archipelago Juan Fernandez - this is where the Light Cruiser "SMS Dresden", named after my hometown, was sunk in March 1915 - almost exactly 100 years ago) to have the possibility for an emergency landing (or watering) near a permanent settlement. With a kind of VFR approach, I should reach Santiago or at least Valparaiso, though. I am encouraged in this as my flight planner seems to overestimate fuel consumption of my Tupolev; yesterday I had more than 4,000 liters left after a flight of 1,648 nm.

One way or the other, this will probably the longest flight of this RTW journey. To my surprise, crossing the Atlantic Ocean from Bermuda to Lajes/Acores is 200 miles shorter.

After all that water, I am really looking forward to Chile and its mountains, where I spent wonderful holidays almost ten years ago. As the southern summer slowly comes to an end, I will hurry to visit Patagonia under acceptable weather conditions for some GA flights once again. And than it's finally time to head north again...

Hi Jon, thanks again! No, I didn't. I just choose it as wpt to have an inhabited place on my route in case I go out of fuel. (So far I just planned the flight, not did it)

But I once flew there from Valpo-Rodelillo with a C185. That was matter of patience...

Refreshments?

Drank a bottle of Vodka while flying in Russia. Didn't know what to drink in North KOrea, China and Vietnam. Will report before my next flight (what do they actually drink in Manila?).

In Manilla, they drink Tanduay Rhum! (or at least I do,when I'm there ;)

I finally did it:
Mataveri Intl./Easter Island SCIP to Santiago de Chile SCEL.

It was a nice morning. So peaceful.

150217Tu134SCIP1_zps2eb34427.jpg

Suddenly, the roaring sound of Soloviev jets filled the air and the Tu-134 took off into the pacific skies.

150217Tu134SCIP2_zps3d594daa.jpg

With the wind turning soon from 24 kts/east to about 60 kts/west I was able to reach 530 kts TAS with normal power settings.

150217Tu134SCIP3_zps92021db7.jpg

Passed Isla Alejandro Selkirk...

150217Tu134SCEL1_zps81c6ca4f.jpg

... and checked my fuel just over Isla Robinson Crusoe - still 4.600 liters. I looked down -

150217Tu134SCEL2_zpsd495ebec.jpg

- and experienced a crash of my sim (-> terrain.dll). I had to reconstruct all values of my crashed flight and continued.

Land in sight!

And finally an airport with a lot of AI traffic to spot.

Today: The probably southernmost Interflug operations ever - Santiago SCEL to Punta Arenas SCCI.

... as well as the view onto the city right after take-off.

150223Tu134SCEL3_zps5f4205e3.jpg

Heading south we follow the Central Valley and pass Temuco with its old Maquehue airport. It was replaced by a modern airport south of the city, but I prefer the old one. This picture shows the imagination of a GA approach to old SCTC with Volcán Llaima in the right background, following an AI plane. (In 2006, I had the pleasure to fly there with a 737-200 (built 1979) in real world.)

Lago Llanquihue with the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes...

... and that's how they look from Puerto Montt airport. Again, this looks very realistic compared with my rememberance of the real scenery. The FS9Evo textures give further immersion as they look particular well and realistic in this area of the world.

'Home' at last Harald.

Great shots, great journey.  Sad to learn of the computer's crash ... rather disconcerting.  Trust you don't experience another.
