How is Windows 7 Home Premium addressed?

Dear Sir/Madam ...

Robin

"Onward & Upward" ...
To the Stars, & Beyond...

One additional bit of clarification for those interested in joining the Windows Insider program... no matter which Genuine version of Windows 7/8.1 that you have when you join, the tech preview build you will receive is Windows 10 Pro.  The Microsoft store knows what Genuine Windows version you had before you upgraded to the Tech Preview build.  When Windows 10 goes live on 29 July you will be officially upgraded to the Windows 10 version corresponding to what you originally had on your PC.  If you had Windows 7 Starter/Home Basic/Home Premium or Windows 8.1/8.1 With Bing then you will be upgraded to Windows 10 Home.  If you had Windows 7 Pro/Ultimate or Windows 8.1 Pro you will be upgraded to Windows 10 Pro.

Also, for those with Windows 7, you must be updated to Windows 7 SP1 in order to get the update to Windows 10.  As for Windows 8, you must be running Windows 8.1 to qualify for the upgrade.

Any thoughts on how it will deal with a clean install of win 10?

On one of my win 8.1 machines the upgrade failed lots of times so I formatted and installed from an iso.

Hey Chris,

Because Win 10 is still "beta" Microsoft are still working on driver compatibility, hence the occasional problem upgrading over 8.1 with the Tech Preview.  Whenever I've run into that, the clean install has always worked.  Only downside is completely installing your sim and associated add-ons.  I created a detailed OS/P3D reinstall checklist since I clean install more often than not.  In all instances where I've reinstalled P3D after a clean Win 10 TP install, everything has gone perfectly.  You should be fine.

Hi Doug,

Thanks for the reply, that's not what I meant though. You said win 10 will register what os you were using before upgrade and therefore you will get the relevant win 10 version once it goes live.

What I meant was do you have any idea how it will handle a clean install rather than an upgrade.

I'm guessing I will need to reinstall win 8.1 and try the upgrade again, otherwise how will it know what version and license i had previously as I downloaded the ISO on a different pc.

Ah, sorry for the misunderstanding.  Yes, you will need to reinstall 8.1 in order for Windows 10 to see what you had.

microsoft already said, windows 7 and 8 owners will be able to clean install windows 10, when you go to upgrade, you have the option to have a clean install anyway

Hey

Hi Doug windows 10 is sweet I owe yah - aa in p3d is much better and only using the nvidia control panel settings (factory setting) on 353.30 - was a bit scared when I had no graphic control then I said hmm I must have to download a windows 10 driver bam all set - so for now no need for NI - one problem I have noticed is if you install software and it says to restart - it doesnt goes to windows restarting screen and just keeps spinning - and this happened quite a few times - have you seen this other than that all is perfect and things are still intact - p3d just feels better - huge thanks buddy

FYI - there is an issue with shutting down and restarting in windows 10 cant use the graphical menu - you have to right click on windows icon lower left corner and do it that way - no biggie Microsoft are on it

UAC will be reset so you need to go shut that down

FYI FXAA is not working with latest nvidia driver and windows 10 - you get a black screen doesnt lock sim up but have to go back in and shut it off

Does this mean that if I upgrade the copy of W7 I have now to W10 it is effectively turned into an OEM version and if I build a new PC or significantly upgrade my existing PC I have to buy another copy of windows instead of transferring the full retail copy I have now?

No you will not have to buy another copy it will transfer to another computer if you have a w7 version that does install on new builds that is why I bought a full oem version right from Microsoft so I didnt have this problem as I did buy a cheap version and it was only good on one pc - my new version allows me to load anytime I want as log as it is only on one machine - not knowing what version you have I dont know in your case - then again maybe with windows 10 if you jump on board maybe you could be all set - you will have to search for specifics - I know I am covered

I also experienced this with one of my PCs... but again, Win 10 TP is "beta' software.  I expect these type issues will be resolved when Win 10 goes to General Availability on 29 July.  But again, with the millions of possible hardware/software configurations in the PC world today, there are sure to be isolated issues.  I will load up the latest Windows Insider build just released to the "Fast Ring" yesterday (10158) and see if that corrects the restarting issue.

FYI FXAA is not working with latest nvidia driver and windows 10 - you get a black screen doesnt lock sim up but have to go back in and shut it off

I have not experienced this with any of my PCs, so this is likely something unique to your specific hardware/software configuration.  I know others have had this issue as well so fairly certain both Microsoft and NVIDIA are aware.

microsoft already said, windows 7 and 8 owners will be able to clean install windows 10, when you go to upgrade, you have the option to have a clean install anyway

Just to clarify, Brett... your initial install will be the actual upgrade to Windows 10 over the top of your currently installed Genuine Windows 7/8 installation.  It is only after that has completed that you can then (once you have access to the ISO from Microsoft) perform a clean install.  The initial update that you must do first is what establishes the "key" in the Microsoft Store that marries your hardware configuration with your Microsoft Account.  Once that "key" exists in the store you can then perform clean installs on that specific PC as many times as you like going forward.  You will not need a key to type in during subsequent clean installs on that PC as Microsoft will verify the hardware configuration and your Microsoft Account each time and authenticate the install behind the scenes.
