WINDOWS 10 and what it mean for us.

Featured Replies

For what it's worth, it is always best to do a clean install so you're assured you have the cleanest possible installation.  The Windows registry is a massive thing and gets filled with "cruft" and can get sluggish over time.  Doing an update over an existing install modifies the registry, but doesn't wipe it out since you want to preserve all the applications, etc. that are already installed.  I've done Win10 TP upgrades over Windows 8.1 and bare metal clean installs and all has been as expected, but still not perfect considering this is beta code.  But I am extremely pleased and looking forward to the final release in late summer (probably September).

However, although there's been some discussion that the final Win10 RTM release can be used to upgrade a Win10 TP installation, I haven't yet seen anything definitive from Microsoft confirming that.  So, if you upgrade to Win10 TP right now, there's no guarantee that you can just update to the final Win10 RTM version when it releases.  But you will certainly be able to upgrade an existing Win 7/8/8.1 installation with Win 10 RTM and preserve all your existing applications, etc.

I have no plans to "play" with Win 10 right now...I will not touch it until its official release, whenever. That being said, I have done numerous Windows installs over the years, always reformatting and installing the fresh new version instead of upgrading what was there. But this time around, I have too much time invested in the system I'm running and the FSX and add-ons I have added. As already noted, after just un-installing FSX and re-installing FSX SE, it has been over a month and I am STILL getting things back in order. I am not going through that again, unless my machine explodes.

If I cannot upgrade my Win 7 64-bit to Win 10 with any degree of confidence, I'll be staying with Win 7. Free or not, it just isn't worth the effort. I'll be watching the news...

Gah, since I have Vista64, I dread a new OS. Reinstall of all my stuff will take months.

Hope Win10 is very compatible with older games.

Here is my 2 cents:  I have FSX.se running in windows 10 enterprise, which I upgraded from windows 8.1.

That said, I had nothing but problems with wind 8.1, specially with USB devices disconnecting to a point it was completely unplayable.  Now with Wind 10  I have no problems with USB's but there are others problems that are making FSX.se crashing/freezing etc. As we all know no 2 systems are the same or even similar, so I never take anyone's claims that they have no issues with wind8.1 or wind10. One thing would be nice to know from those folks that have no problems with  wind 8.1/10  is get the complete system/s, addons, controllers etc so we could compare apples to apples.

Just to have a idea, I use 2 PC's for my FSX's  the main has a i7 5960x @ 4.5 ghz, 64 gig ram, 3 x Titans SC, 3  x 30" displays @ 7982x1600.  400gigs just for FSX + OS + addons. my Network PC has 6 other addons  4 displays.  and I could go on and on.

So my advice is try it and see for yourself, you might be one of the lucky ones with no issues. ^_^

Asus Rampage VI Extreme Encore(water Cooled) EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3 Hybrid, 64 DD4 @ 2800 2 x 2x M.2 in raid 0.

So...it appears, as I follow this thread, that allowing Win 10 to upgrade my system from Win 7 will not (supposedly) mess with the entire drive I have assigned to FSX SE and all of the add-ons. If I wait till the new version goes gold, and let MS change my machine without doing a clean install, things SHOULD continue to work without my having to re-install everything.

I hope this is correct, because for once I wouldn't mind getting something free from MS, especially a new OS - I think Win 7/64 cost me $140 - and I'd also like to stay current. But I stuck with XP and stayed away from Vista before committing to Win 7/64, and this time around, I have to be as certain as possible. I cannot at this time do a complete re-format and clean install of Win 10, so this path is my only recourse.

I will be here following the news until the final code is posted.

Win 10 is not perfect yet, but i'm verry happy with it so far. My anti virus package( f-secure) won't run for now.

But sim wise it rocks for me.

I'm using win 10 10130 build with FSX:SE with PMDG 737/777 RealAir turbo Duke V2 / REX4 / ORBX Global / ASN / Saitek X55 without any problems so far. No out of mem with long flights, no usb disconnects so far. DCS runs super with it. Xplane runs super to( altough tryed no addons yet).

This is a clean install, with update from 8.1 there were graphic issues with FSX:SE(black screen while selecting aircraft), no idea how or why.

OK specs

Just unpin them from your start menu. Right Click----> Unpin from start menu. I personally prefer the tiles, but then again I have a Windows Phone/Windows 8.1 and have grown to kinda like them. To each his own.

If you join the Windows Insider program and login to your PC using your Microsoft Account credentials, you can upgrade to Windows 10 Pro RTM on July 29th.  I am currently running the Pro version (Build 10130) and will be upgraded automatically to Win10Pro RTM first thing on 29 July.  No need to wait till 31 August.

Where did you read that the Pro version wasn't available until 31 August?

No more Media Center in Pro.  Wah!

Who really used Media Centre? Almost all new TVs come with built in software for streaming programs like Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon video. I don't know why anyone needs a Media PC anymore.

Hi Rich - Here's what you need to know.  There are actually two ways to get your free Windows 10 Pro upgrade on 29 July:

First: If you have a Genuine copy of Windows 7 Pro/Ultimate or Windows 8.1 Pro loaded on your PC and you sign up for the Windows Insider program using your Microsoft Account credentials, then on 29 July 2015 you will automatically be updated to Windows 10 Pro.  Here's a link to a blog post by Microsoft's Gabe Aul explaining how the Windows Insider program will work going forward now that we are approaching Windows 10 RTM on 29 July.

Secondly: If you don't want to be a Windows Insider and your PC is running a Genuine copy of Windows 7 Pro/Ultimate or Windows 8.1 Pro, you will see an icon in the System Tray alerting you that you are fully qualified to receive a free Windows 10 Pro update on 29 July.  You have to "sign up" by clicking the icon and following the simple instructions.  After you sign up, Microsoft will push the Windows 10 Pro bits to your PC incrementally prior to 29 July so that on that date you can perform the free upgrade right away with out having to wait for a download.

Notes on the Upgrade: The update you receive will upgrade your current installation with Windows 10 Pro preserving all your applications and data.  All my FSX and P3D installs worked flawlessly after upgrading from Windows 8.1.  Once your computer has been updated to Win 10 Pro, it will be locked in and tied to your Microsoft Account so you can do clean installs with the Win 10 Pro ISO (free download from Microsoft) as many times as you like on that PC for as long as you own it.  That PC will also receive free Windows Updates (all updates) for as long as you own that PC.  You will never pay a penny for Windows 10 or any future updates.

For me, Windows 10 rocks and P3D runs very, very well.  Enjoy!
