Upgrade from Sandybridge to Skylake - Results

Hi guys.

I have been on a 2500k for many years and made the step to Skylake. My comparison specs are as follows;

Old PC:

  • i5 2500k @ 4.7ghz (overclocked)
  • 16GB corsair DDR3 1600mhz
  • 2 SSD's (totalling 160gb in total space) and 2 HDD's (for FS and games)
  • Dark rock pro II
  • Asus P8-z77
  • GTX970/GTX980ti for a time

New PC

  • i7 6700k (stock at the moment at 4.0 with 4.2 boost)
  • 16GB 3000MHZ corsair LPX
  • NZXT Kraken
  • 2 SSDs 1TB for OS and games and dedicated 500gb for FS
  • Asus Maximus Ranger VIII
  • GTX980ti

Now my results as the internet is very interested in the difference.

I can categorically say that from my initial results are significant to what I was expecting. I haven't even overclocked the processor yet and I am seeing around 50% performance increase across the board in Prepar3d.

At UK2000 heathrow even with the gtx980ti I was getting between 25fps-35 (with quite a bit of jumping up and down) in the VC in the 777. Now with the Skylake I am getting pretty much constant 40 with fps in the VC hitting 70fps on occasion. As I departed London (with ORBX etc) fps were hovering around 60fps in the VC.. The smoothness is what I notice most though as the sim doesn't feel to be struggling at this stage... Locking the fps at 40fps in the cruise looked sluggish once again even though it didn't budge from 40.

I am currently flying to Seattle Tacoma (With the Taxi2gate addon scenery) and I will update this thread with the results..

Definitely worth a platform update if you can. I am aware that I am on a pretty signifant bit of kit. The combination of Prepar3d and the GTX980ti is probably why I am getting such good performance at the higher settings.

If anyone wants me to clarify anything I would be more than happy to, whether it be settings or situation.

So far, my big stamp of approval of significant performance upgrade, even at stock speeds (at the moment).

If you're seeing such a great improvement now, it'll be fascinating to see what sort of result you get when you're overclocking the Skylake.

82 in the VC.. I see what I can look forward to in a few short years !

Now on 4.5ghz gents.. NGX at copengahen was a dream, now hitting around 65fps in the ngx. On the ground it was around 40-50.. Very very smooth feeling.

I'm on 4.4 ghz (i7 4770K) and GTX 970 and best I can do at FlyTampa Copenhagen in the NGX is 25 fps.

I depends on  a number of things. Don;t get me wrong, I don;t go crazy with the copenhagen in built settings. Also I used to get bad performance on DX9, but DX10 and P3d it's miles better at CPH.

Well, this is also P3D with highly moderate settings. I've come to the conclusion that it is only me who has to suffer crappy performance and a ridiculously high VAS usage, which is unaffected by any changes in settings (LOD, cloud layers, texture size, autogen you name it). But good for you. Nice PC you've got there.

I still have the 2600K at 4.5 ghz overclocked. It works fine for me. Not planning to upgrade too soon.

We still need a lot of test results. Still, FSX is a 32-bit application, therefore I think, is the biggest problem instead of the frames per second.

The VAS-ctd's are giving me some sort of a mini-heart attack just like bsod's do.

In the near future I will probably look into this CPU even further. I like those FPS you got in there mate! :Applause:

Alex,

The screenshots that you posted, are they with "OPTIMIZED_PARTS=1" or without that fix?

I'm thinking about doing an upgrade. I've been running a 2600k @4.6GHZ for the last 4+ years. I'm retiring in 4 months so if I'm going to do it, now is the time. (Fixed income and all that.) The problem is, do I go with a 4790K build or the 6700K build that will cost ~ $200 more? Is there going to be that much more bang for my buck with the 6700K? The opinions on the tech sites is mixed when it comes to gaming. I'm running a GTX 970 video card so I should be all right there.

If you can, I am seeing a massive improvement with skylake 6700k.. I think it would be by far the best platform to upgrade to. You're compromising a lot by going to the 4790k

Alex,

I have the OK from the boss to do the upgrade. For $200 difference I'll more than likely go with the 6700K.
