October 14, 20169 yr Author It's the 8gb 3200 modules I recommend. The price difference between 8 and 16 GB is, as I said, small. Up to you though. Two sticks is best, but Skylake does seem to handle 4 sticks better than older platforms. I'd still opt for two though. To clarify, it's the NH-D15S you should opt for. The high comparability version. And make sure your case is big enough. Only two degrees different Chris with one fan. But if you are desperate for two fans, why not get the D15S and add a second fan. It comes with the clips to do just that. That way you get the high compatibility version... but still the two fans you want. Not sure how the extra fan would impact the RAM though. It's the 8gb 3200 modules I recommend. Thanks Martin, the NH-D15S is a bit out of my budget, costs have already gone £100 past my original budget. What is the Noctua NH-U14S U-Series like? I just like the menacing bulk of the D15. It looks like it means business  I remember the Thermaltake Frio cooler that I had in my i5 2500k PC (which I suspect was rather better than the CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO I have in my new one), and that was a tower block! To be honest, I get the feeling that the Hyper 212 EVO is not doing as good a job at the moment as it did previously. I think I need to open up the case, and see if a bit of dust needs removing.... I might not have this 100%, but here's the jist of what's going on - Windows 7 When installing from scratch, Windows 7 needs to have "EHCI" USB support from the motherboard chipset. The Windows 7 installation environment supports up to EHCI standards and uses this to support any USB devices it needs during the install, such as your keyboard, mouse, and the install media. EHCI support has been removed on the Skylake platform in lieu of the newer "xHCI" USB support. Unfortunately, Windows 7 does not have "xHCI" support in its installation environment, and this causes problems for the install. On a Skylake, you can boot into a Windows 7 installation, but your USB keyboard and mouse will not function! All is not lost, though - if you're looking to use Windows 7 on a Skylake, expect to need following: Plan on using DVD media for the installation. Have a PS/2 style keyboard and mouse, and a motherboard that has the needed port. This is why you suddenly see the re-appearance of PS/2 ports on Skylake motherboards - they can be used by legacy operating systems which don't have support for xHCI. Once you've got Windows 7 installed, you will end up with all the needed drivers to regain full functionality and you can carry on just fine. The installation process is where you need to pay some attention to the situation. Windows 10 Contrast this with Windows 10. The Win10 installation environment does natively support the xHCI standards, so it is not affected by this and it can use all the USB devices and media you may need from the get-go. So... If you're planning Skylake + Windows 7, have DVD media ready to install, a PS/2 keyboard and mouse for your installation, and a motherboard with the PS/2 port for use during installation. Voila!
October 14, 20169 yr Win7 is fine with usb mouse keeboard i run it in usb2 ports, you need ps2 when install XP on Skylake http://

October 14, 20169 yr Thanks fellas, but again, conflicting information!! The Z170 does have a PS/2, but it looks like a single port. Check to see if the mobo ships with an adapter which splits the port into two - one for kbd, one for mouse. If they don't include one, it's usually under $5 to get the PS/2 combo port adapter. It's only the installation environment which is sensitive to the USB situation. Once you're actually into Windows 7 and have all the motherboard drivers squared away, you will be fine with USB stuff.
October 14, 20169 yr You not need it , installed the OS yesterday from DVD Win7 pro 64bit Swe ( dvd without SP1) Logitec usb mouse and generic usb keeboard used the usb2 ports not the PS2 Its on Asus board dont know the other ones.
