Accidentally ordered an OEM version istead of retail. Any info from you serious overclockers about OEM quality? Would you advice a return for a retail version or go for it? Guarantee is 1 year instead of 3 though I never had an issue with failed CPU.

As far as I'm aware, there is no difference at all between a retail and an OEM CPU. Apart from a fancy box that is, and with previous platforms a [crap] cooler with the retail. Warranty is probably lower as it's cheaper.

Iv'e purchased many OEM chips.

Install W7 on Z170 is no difference 6700k or 7700k no reason to go for a 6700k if you want W7

Interesting, so the noise about Kaby lake not supporting windows 7 is just, noise?

Current System (Running at 4k): ASUS ROG STRIX X670E-F, Ryzen 7800X3D, RTX 5090, 55" Samsung Q80T, 64GB DDR5 6000 RAM, EVGA CLC 280mm AIO Cooler, Brunner CLS-E NG Yoke, Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS & Stick, Thrustmaster TCA Quadrant & Add-on, VirtualFly Ruddo+, TQ6+ and Yoko+, GoFlight MCP-PRO and EFIS, Skalarki FCU and MCDU

Almost 90 degrees?  That seems high to me.

A quick report from me too. Reach also 5.0 Ghz at 1.37v, though in RealBench temp climbs to 95C. In XTU it max around 85. I'm on a H100i v2. That's 10min after install, will have to play a lot with settings to see what is the best I can get. Any advice on lowering temperatures except lowering Vcore would be welcome :) Except a new bios update is needed as indicated by Martin. I'm running the latest F20 on Gigabyte Z170X-Gaming 7.

Yes, it runs on vista and with betabios winXP

Just a few more runs and it turned out I have to offset AVX. Without AVX I can run 49x103, which is 5.047 GHz, at 1.4v.

With AVX on at least 4.635 GHz no problem, at 1.25v. 4.84 probably OK, but need to test more.

I stick with air cooler, Noctua NH-D15S. At 5GHz temps are 70 - 80C across 4 core running prime 95 non-AVX version.

My chip probably is just average or slightly below average.

Better cooler and/or delidding. What's the ambient like where you are?

I didn't say you needed a new BIOS. Just that Asus boards "initially" had high temp issues as a result of certain voltages. Fixed after a few BIOS updates. I've no idea if that applies to your brand of motherboard.

That's from when I was running higher volts (1.4). Plus, it's the middle of summer and hot here.

Whats the ambient John, and what cooler?

The ambient is room temperature, around 23C (72F).

95 is high in RealBench.

Would that be the blend test then?

Might be a bit higher in RealBench.

Thanks Martin. I'm trying to understand if the temperature of the vcore characterizes the quality of the cpu. If I can run it at 5 Ghz at 1.37 I suppose its not a bad chip. Then I'm thinking if these temperatures on a H100i are what I should expect, should I consider a ticket to Gigabyte to look their bios or should I play with another setting in the voltage settings in bios.

There is no way I would run my CPU at that high of a temp.  It's mystifying considering the water cooler you are using.  I hope you find a resolution.
