as part of the move to P3D I have upcoming, it appears that to "get the most out of the sim", I will need a faster GPU.  Forum surfing has me zeroed in on the EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti SC2 Gaming.  Apparently, people buying these and similar cards in bulk for mining cryptocurrency has driven their market price into chaos.

eBay is full of used ones that were used for mining at $600 or less - a price I can't touch on a new one.  I've never bought a used computer component.  Is this worth it ?

I would say so. I am currently considering this option myself as the new prices of the 1080 ti are just insane.

I have sold a number of GPU's in the past and I haven'thad any complaints from any of the buyers 🙂

Hopefully, a buying experience wouldn't be any different.

A caveat though is that the ones used for mining have probably been run at 100% for days / weeks on end. I have seen plenty with a good price that have only been used in gaming rigs. Perhaps better to get one of those?

Save up another $99 and buy an MSI GTX 1080 Ti GAMING 11G (a great card) new for $699: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814137114&cm_re=GeForce_GTX_1080_Ti-_-14-137-114-_-Product. The problem with used cards (particularly those used for mining AND from eBay) is that you have no idea if they were overclocked and left running continuously. You may be lucky, but for an extra $99 you get the benefit of a new card with a full warranty. Even with the "ex-gaming rig" cards, you're relying on the seller telling the truth.

you both make good points about the abuse these cards may have suffered.  I assume prolonged operation at high temps does not help service life.

That's an interesting tip on the MSI card - thanx !      its on sale another 12 hrs.

I'm leery of buying used computers or components unless you know where they came from or at lease come with a warranty.  I'd feel pretty bad if I bought a graphics card for $600, plugged it in and found it to be dead or very near dying and no recourse.

Here I have 2 Gigabyte 1080 Ti Gaming  OC cards for 1000 euro’s together for sale.

 

I bought my used GTX 980ti about a year and a half from another user on this site and it still works perfectly.

GPU's like other modern computer hardware are far more robust than they used to be. I'll wait a little longer and wait for the used price to get down to $500 which won't be long. I wouldn't buy on Ebay though. I would buy form a local buy and sell site like craigslist. Go pick up the card yourself so that you can see it running before you hand over the cash. You can also checkout the neighbourhood and the environment the card was tested in. IMO 2nd generation hardware is the way to go given that the 1st generation stuff is all gold plated. I cant see the gold but it must be there for those prices.

Of course there is a risk but if your goal in life is to eliminate risk you'll never get anywhere! 😁

For € 550 I sell them seperately.

I can understand the temptation to buy used, but I have always steered clear for the only reason, that if you don’t know the component’s history, you could be risking good money. If you’re buying from a friend fine, but imagine buying a graphics card that has been poorly overclocked or the fan bearing is noisy.  Having said that, I’m sure there are some good opportunities to be had, but they have to be considered with some caution. Although.... if I was going to buy used, I think I’d probably feel reasonably comfortable doing so from another simmer on Avsim rather than an unknown on Ebay 😉

In the Netherlands we have Marketplace and it has a service called Crossing together.

You pay to Marketplace and wait for the item to arrive. You then have max 7 days to test it. After 7 days the seller will be paid, or when you acknowladge Marketplace .

Simple and save.
