Have a few quid spare and wondered where it would be best to spend:

8700k to 9900k

or

1070 to 2080ti

Mostly playing P3D and starting out with XPlane, run everything Orbx, UTL, AS, RexSF, Projectfly, Trackhat, etc.......

With your setup, I'd probably update the grapics card, but why not wait for Vulkan to be released for X-Plane and see what the result is? By that time, the price of the gfx card should also have decreased.

 

If you use a high-res monitor (e.g. 3360x1440, 3840x2160), the 2080Ti will produce pretty significant improvements over the 1070.  It's probably a good step up for VR as well, but I don't have VR experience from which to speak on that.

The performance bump (mostly improved terrain/texture loading) from adding two cores to your current six isn't likely going to justify the change, even assuming that you get a 9900K that will hold 5 GHz.

Why don't you check the data and see if your GPU is at 100% for significant periods of time?

I keep thinking graphics card but cpu is cheaper bang for buck.

@w6kd I am 4k and my 1070 holds up unless in heavy payware airports or cloud. I'm lucky that I get just over 5ghz o/c outta my 8700k

@Luke nope graphics is not 100 in cruise or flying. It does struggle around payware airports with gsx, weather and orbx ground textures all fighting for time with gpu. More eye candy the biggest impact on frames even when I have turned stuff down to lift fps. Biggest improvements i saw was turning off shadows at night and turning them low during day.

What if I doubled ram to 32gb?

Well, the 2080Ti will hold up even in heavy airports and clouds.  Before the 2080Ti I had a pair of 1080Ti GPUs in SLI just because I wanted to avoid struggling in heavy wx and scenery.  The 2080Ti is a slightly better performer than the two 1080Ti boards.

32GB of RAM will be of no benefit at all in running P3D.

If your GPU isn't at 100% (really >90%) consistently at airports then you're not GPU limited. If you don't upgrade your limiting factor (no matter what is cheaper) then you won't see a significant difference.

When you see the issues, make sure NV Inspector is running and see what the GPU usage is at.

To keep things smooth, it's necessary to configure for *peak* workloads, not average ones.  So I'd say instead that if the GPU hits the 95%+ mark accompanied by slowdowns and/or stutters in any situation where you don't want that to happen, then adding GPU power will very likely prevent or reduce those overload effects.  So if the GPU sits consistently at 70% most of the time on an airport, but spikes to near 100% when you add a couple layers of clouds, or at night with dynamic lighting, etc, then you have the choice of accepting the slowdowns and stutters, changing your acft/scenery/wx choices or settings to avoid those heavy load situations, or plussing up the graphics subsystem to be able to absorb that peak load at something under 100% GPU utilization.

Doesnt a 9900k run alot hotter than a 9700k?? (at same O/C speed)

My 9700k is @ 4.9 on all 8 cores, cooled by H115Pro, max temp mid 70's (fans in quiet mode)

 

 

9900KF just launched by Intel at $420 5hgz 

@w6kd Wow I didn't think the 2080ti was that big in impact that it could do the work to 2x 1080ti's

@Rob_Ainscough Afraid I do like the clouds and airports more than the AI as that is what provides the "simulation" when actually flying and doing IRL pilot simulation.

@MaDDogz Life will be really short if both those parts arrive, when I've refused to pay for a holiday this year!!

Technically it can't. But in practice twin 1080TIs doesn't double performance in FSX/P3D as they can only use a limited amount of the extra performance available through SLI (perhaps 30%?).

Confucious say "zachary"...an SLI config is double the cost, about ten times as much trouble with configuration, driver compatibility etc, and about 30% better performance.  The 2080Ti is a simpler, much less hassle way of getting pretty close to (a little better than) the same performance as that troublesome config of twin 1080Ti boards in SLI.  So the 2080Ti is something like a 35-40% improvement over the 1080Ti, not double. 

That said, the 2080Ti really shines with P3D...I've been all smiles since I installed it.  Both of the orphaned 1080Ti boards are being put to good use now on other projects (one in a driving simulator/FPS gaming box and the other in a portable sim/gaming rig).
