Purpose of the 650?

Featured Replies

Hello all. I just bought my GTN 750 yesterday and have been really happy with it so far. I use it with my FSW Lear 35 and it really brings the aircraft to life. But I wanted to add the 650 to my aircraft because the discount is hard to pass up... the only thing is, I’m not really sure what the 650 is used for. Honestly it looks like just a tiny version of the 750 but if they both do the same functions why would anyone want the small thing? I’m speaking in terms of really life btw. Why would a pilot purchase a 650 when all he needs is a 750?

As an owner of both in real life, I use the 750 for primary navigation tasks, instrument approaches, Flite Charts etc. Bearing in mind these will cross fill into the 650 (except Flite Charts).

The 650, also being NAV/COM 2, I use depending on the stage of flight. During an instrument approach, I use the default nav page for things such as GS, TRK, ETE etc, and en-route, I will have the NRST Airport page active in the event of an emergency and I have to proceed to the nearest field.

Depends on the aircraft type what an owner decides - would you want 2 units in a VFR 172? Maybe not - but in an IFR aircraft you may like the idea of having a backup as well as the functions I mentioned.

Also the 650 is a lot cheaper than the 750 irl

In the sim I mostly use it for what David said (well not crossfill because that isn't modeled) but extra variables that I can display are nice.

And there are some aircraft where there is insufficient room in the panel for a 750..

Carenado F33 Bonanza for example.

You can realistically Purchase 2 x 650s for the price of a single 750.  So yeah when building out the IFR panel and you want that redundant IFR Navigation backup you bet that price is appealing 🙂

Also in addition to  all of these items :).....With the Garmin G3X Touch (now certified as well) or the Garmin G500/G600 (......RXP wink wink...) you would get the data displayed on your larger screens directly in front of you.  So you need the 750/650 for the IFR Capability (the G3X Touch can have a VFR only GPS Map without one) but you might never actually use the display much since you would have that information and data directly in front of you on the Glass Screens.

Hi Folks,

Variety is the spice of life - my A2A aircraft I equip as follows - Cherokee GNS430W - Skylane GNS530W GNS430W - Comanche GTN650 - Bonanza GTN750.

For RW - I think I recall reading that the GTN650 is a "drop in" (use same tray and wiring harness) replacement for the GNS430W - and there were many GNS430W's installed in the GA fleet - makes the upgrade cost far more reasonable for GNS430W owners...

I believe "Crossfill" does work on the RXP products - as long as it's GTN to GTN or GNS to GNS - - - I use it all the time...

Regards,

Scott

GNS, yes, GTN, no, as best I know..

Crossfill works on the GNS units.

The GNS units crossfeed.  The GTN units do not crossfeed unless something changed that has not been documented.

I dont think through F1 units even do crossfill.  Wish rxp could get it working.
