Dive Bomb in a 747

Featured Replies

Last night I flew IFR from Princess Juliana to Guantanamo Bay.   I was at 12,000 feet, 10 miles from the destination when I was handed to the tower and cleared to land, and to descend to about 2000.

Ack!  What do you want me to do?

Then they started barking orders at me and I couldn't keep up, stalled and crashed.  That's why there is more than one person in a cockpit.  Good thing I'm not a real pilot

Sorry, Andy!  Please turn in your pilot's license at the front desk! 😉  Assuming a visual approach to the runway, I have received many of those and I call them "deck dives".

You can have my licence when you...dig beneath the smouldering wreckage somewhere in eastern Cuba...

The ATC in FSX does some weird things, like make you do 90 degree turns with the end result being back on the course that you had been following.  It's landing clearance will sometimes make you descend at ridiculous rates.

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

I was thinking FSX's default ATC too.  It is awful for IFR flights - I use third party ATC instead.  In the meantime, andyjohnston, you can just try to descend normally and safely, then radio the airport tower to report a missed approach once you know a safe landing would be impossible.  You will be vectored to a go-around and a safer attempt at the landing.

FSX ATC once sent me every which way on an IFR flight to Zurich, even reversing my course a few times!  Finally gave up and ended the whole flight...  A more reliable and realistic ATC is certainly on my wish list for "2020".

Is RadarContact a good one ?
