P3Dv4 Uses 50% Memory

Featured Replies

Hi all, I need some enlightenment over the use of memory for P3D.

I am running the latest version of P3Dv4 on my system with Intel 8700k overclocks to 4.8GHz, 16GB memory and GTX1080Ti and the following add on.

  • Orbx base pack
  • Orbx Vector
  • Imagine Simulation WSSS
  • SamScene WSSS

While approaching WSSS with Aerosoft A330, I realize that P3D is utilizing 8GB out of my 16GB installed memory. I have checked and verified that Windows 10 is detecting my 16GB memory correctly. Windows 10 is managing my Pagefile automatically. I tried to fly into the same terrain with PMDG 777 or general flying, I am getting the same result.

Generally, I am getting 100fps and above during general flying and between 20fps to 40fps while flying into WSSS.

It has so far, been a very smooth flying experience except I find it strange why P3D is limiting itself to 50% of my total memory.

Hoping someone can enlighten me about any rationale reasoning behind this 50% memory.

It's not limiting itself. It will use more than 8GB when it needs to. I find it funny that some folks buy 32GB where in most cases not even 10 will be used, with huge amounts of scenery/detail/addons, etc.

I have 32GB, but i'm not using P3D only on my PC.

This is perfectly normal, as you add more scenery, AI traffic and higher definition textures the ram use will go up.

For what it is worth... P3DV4.5. only uses about 5-6 GB RAM and 4-5 GB VRAM on my system, but that is because my settings are conservative and I have a 1080p monitor..

The sim runs great at a steady 30 fps.. no complaints

Two comments...1.) don't worry about the memory usage. What you see is fine. And... 2.) limit your FPS to the monitor refresh rate ( or lower)...anything higher is wasted.

Thanks for all your comments.

I find it curious that under the Task Manager > Performance > Memory, the top graph is displaying the correct memory at 16GB. However, the details below the graph indicates 8GB as ''In Use'' and another 8GB as ''Available''. Get confused by this ''Available" which contradicts with the total install memory.

You could try looking at the Resource Monitor, which displays more detail.

It'll only use what it needs

No, it'll use what is available.

P3D will cut its coat according to the cloth you give it.

I have a 4 year old PC with 8 Gigs of RAM, system ram that is, not v ram. Frames locked at 25. I get about 20-25 even in high def. areas, with the occasional drop into the high teens. My settings are also conservative, and I have a 2560 to 1080p monitor.

I wish people would stop peddling these "OMIGOD P3D needs a gazillion gigantobytes of this that and the other"-misconceptions.

And, please, stop fiddling with your sim. Fly the word not allowed thing!

99.9% of these so called fixes are voodoo, placebo, and baloney, bound to do more damage than improve things.

There's only one fix that's guaranteed to work each and every time...wait for it....

Turn down your settings!

Well... most of us use computers that have a great deal more than just the sim running.  I can max the memory out with of memory... it's fun to watch the slide show as the OS tries to compensate and adjust... so... no, 10 is not enough.  Not if you want a system that performs at peak efficiency during simming.
