Is there no way to disable Win 10 updating itself?

I see posts here and there on this forum but they don't necessary stem from updates even though the OP believes that was the case, and certainly posts about this outside of the context of flight simulation.  My particular history came from a time when it was useful to declutter every other service not necessary for flight simulation but perhaps those days are done now.   In any case I'm happy an update can be uninstalled in case it's an issue.

I see these types of posts here and there including this one which I think turned out to be nothing.  I just definitely prefer to have control over what's dumped into the box rather than mandatory installs w/o my permission.

My questions at that time got several responses from useful people on this community, so I let the update go without issues at the end.

Those days are over now. With a few exceptions, most system services don't consume any appreciable CPU and we have plenty of spare cores.

Cheers!

Thanks Luke that is good to know.   I do like having nothing but OS/P3D/Add-ons in this install it *should* be less vulnerable to corruption, malware, etc.  The reality is I don't use the Windows machine for anything but P3D and a few games so I could probably go back to single-boot configuration and all should be just as resilient.   Next time--the dual boot is already setup and works as it should so we're good for now.

I'm especially interested in this when I read many articles about problems that surface after these mandatory updates for Win 10.

Even for the more well-publicised problems with Windows Updates, they mostly only affect a very small number of users and often only those with a specific, non-standard installation. I keep my system fully updated (with the exception of drivers, which I exclude from the updates) and haven't had a single issue.

Are there tons of flightsimmers complaining to have issues with their flightsimulator(s) after Windows 10 updates itself?

Whilst I can't speak for anyone else, after some recent reorganising I currently only have FSX:SE installed and didn't have to do anything special to get it running. I'm not even running it in Windows 7 compatibility mode which some people seem to suggest is essential. I've never had an update which has affected the sim.

Windows Update Blocker is the best tool I've found for controlling when I accept MS's "updates" (I'll be kind calling them that ).  It's a portable app, easy and quick to use (whether blocking or unblocking), and allows other services to be configured in the blocking (think "Update Orchestrator Service" and "Windows Update Medic Service").  It also blocks scheduled tasks MS throws in to force when the end user receives updates (this feature is also user configurable).  WUP can be downloaded here

Fantastic, Greg! Just what I was looking for because MS and their push Updates have certainly screwed my on-board sound output that worked flawlessly under Windows 7. Now, in the middle of a flight, all of a sudden the sound just vanishes. Have to kick-start it by pulling-pushing speaker input cable back and forth a few times for the sound to come back on. Now, I can finally banish those wretched so-called Updates and control those Services too.

How do you know that an update is causing that? If the sound works at the start of a flight, it’s unlikely to be caused by the OS. Does the sound disappear in a similar way when using other games/apps? If reinserting the cable fixes it, it’s almost certainly a hardware problem.

Because in Windows 7 I had sound output all the time, whether I was flying the sim or web browsing sites; I could turn off the sound in the sim and return to it later and switch it back on no issues. Windows 10 specially the later Builds has a way of stealing the focus despite as Noel stated opting for the 'Do Nothing' in the Sound Settings.Tell me then,if it is not a Windows 10 issue, why is that despite hitting the 'Manage Sound Devices applet, sod-all happens till I tune a radio station to get it's live broadcast sound on, and ONLY then, will the sim sound or another web site that has live streaming sound, return.

If it were a hardware fault as you are alluding to(and I have the latest drivers), then surely the radio station would have no sound too, logically speaking?

And this is not the first time this Windows 10 problem re:sound has been raised. Only have to trawl the Net to see issues reported

Most of the time as long as I go to the Sound Control Panel and toggle Do Nothing off, then back on again, all's well.  YES, this is a Windows 10 problem.  All MS needs to do it would seem is to LOAD the setting most recently set in the sound control panel.  It's a bug is all I'm tempted to contact MS about it but since I have an OEM disk they probably won't talk to me dunno.

It is a bug, I fully concur with you, as I stated to vortex681, all that silly shenanigans of having to switch a radio station's Radio Player app, just to get sound back in a flightsim, is sheer crass idiocy. Akin to you have to go to the service station to get your battery connected to start your car!! 😡 And as you say, you and I are mere small fishes in the MS pond as long as it can carry on flogging its Store load-of-bs that is all that matters to them, and the MS sycophants here.........well, that's another story!

It is entertaining to me to read articles about how the latest update has trashed computers. The headline is always about some major problem that is caused by an update. Usually the article says that users are reporting a problem. It never says how many users. It might say many, but without any explanation in terms of even a guess of how many. I believe a problem happened, but I have to agree with vortex, here.

I am reminded of the number of times that a major malware hit, and several big institutions were hit hard. In many cases MS had already issued an effective patch. But because of distrust of updates, they were never applied. It is easy to blame the OS for problems that might be software generated. It is interesting to me that even FS9 runs on everything from XP to W10 right out of the box. While add-ons either don't work or need constant updates.

I trust that the OP has followed standard trouble shooting procedures to diagnose the sound problem. It certainly sounds like some kind of hardware conflict or failure to me. Which is it that gets sound back, unplug or tune radio station?

Kindly explain the logical sequence to me,as to how, a piece of on-board hardware, that worked without one single sound issue flaw in Windows 7 x 64 Pro, now, all of a sudden, the same hardware, the very latest drivers, has a perennial sound issue problem when on a long 747-400 flight, whoopsie, where's that roar of the engines gone? 'Oh, it's your hardware taking a comfort break! It will return if you play around with the input cable, et al'🤣. Pleeee-ze, give me a break!
