Regular crashes to desktop

Featured Replies

I am a new user of P3D and V5 is my first experience of the sim.

I am getting more regular crashes and it always appears to be a graphics problem. Today, two complete crashes and the error messages said:

CRASH 1
"Your dedicated graphics memory has run out."

CRASH 2
"This device (NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER) stopped working for the following reason: DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG."

Are these known issues? They are totally ruining my enjoyment and ability to use the software.

Thanks

where is it happening?  Looks like you are exceeding your VRAM.

5800X3D, 4090FE, 64GB DDR4 3600C16, Gigabyte X570S MB, EVO 970 M.2's, Alienware 3821DW  and 2  22" monitors, Corsair RM1000x PSU,  360MM MSI MEG, MFG Crosswind, T16000M Stick, Boeing TCA Yoke/Throttle, Skalarki MCDU and FCU, Logitech Radio Panel/Switch Panel, Spad.Next

It's happening at some add on airports.

Hard to understand ( and believe) but in P3Dv5 this is your problem, not enough VRAM.

To avoid CTD you must reduce your P3D settings or start to fly non-complex aircraft in non complex areas.

Disappointed , isn't?

The LM forum is full of those. DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG is the new OOM, shifted from the CPU to the GPU.

I had it once, too (with a 11 GB card!). Yes, you have to lower settings. Good candidates:

Texture resolution (to 2048 or even 1024)

LOD

Autogen and Autogen distance (you may want to try distance to Medium)

Edit: There's also "texture compression" which I however never tried yet.

Kind regards, Michael

Yes, this is a known issue. You are running out of VRAM; you can monitor your VRAM the same way you do your framerate with Shift-Z to show the info text in the upper left corner.

With basically the same specs as you, here's what I've settled on:

Screen Resolution 2560x1440 (4K was too high for reasonable settings with an 8GB VRAM card like yours and mine)
I run at 1440p, 30Hz, VSYNC on, Triple Buffering on, Framerate unlimited
Texture Resolution: 2048
Antialiasing: 4xSSAA
Level of Detail: High
Enhanced Atmospherics: On, set to Medium
Shadow Distance and Quality: Medium
Shadows on User Object, Simobjects, Clouds, Buildings
Special Effects: Low
Dynamic Reflections: Low
Autogen and Scenery Objects, Distance:Very High, Buildings and Vegetation on Dense.
Dynamic Lighting Off during the day; when I turn it on for night flights I need to turn down something else, usually Texture Resolution to 1024.

There are exceptions to the above:

1) This won't work with a complex aircraft and a very dense scenery - specifically for me LVFR KMIA or LVFR LEMD - both of those require further compromises, usually texture resolution to 1024 and Level of Detail to Medium. It DOES work at others like Obrx ESSA, the Justsim sceneries in Europe and others, but the most complex airports will require a texture resolution of 1024.

2) Some aircraft need more VRAM, specifically those that use Trueglass and Reallight. There's basically three (four) tiers:

a) Low VRAM aircraft: Flysimware Lear35, Falcon50, MU-2, most GA aircraft

b) Medium VRAM aircraft: Aerosoft A330, Majestic Q400

c) High VRAM aircraft: Leonardo Maddog, Aerosoft A318-321

d) Out-of-this-world VRAM aircraft: TFDi 717

The differences are in nuances to how the interior model is built and whether they use Reallight for lighting, whether they use PBR (the all PBR A330 is the most efficient with VRAM for airliners that I have).

3) If you encounter rain in a high VRAM aircraft, or at a dense airport/scenery area, you may want to turn off Trueglass (in the menu), because that can push you over the edge.

I have found that you need to keep a 1GB-1.5GB buffer to avoid crashes, because at times v5 will spike VRAM usage temporarily (usually approaching an airport) and this is where most crashes appear.

Also, be careful with view changes. If you're running on the edge, don't go wildly changing view and swinging the view around...adjust a setting down before you do that....

Using the above, I haven't had a VRAM crash in two weeks and have flown maybe 30 segments to/from third party airports in all the above aircraft. It is a hassle and hopefully better VRAM management and soft errors rather than hard crashes will appear with P3Dv5 HF2, but until then, this is how to make it work.

Thanks everyone.

Wow..I was pretty sure my system would be able to handle pretty decent graphics detail and I'm disappointed that it can't having spent a lot on add on aircraft and scenery.

Is this something LM are looking into? Sorry for my limited knowledge but is it an issue with the system that should be solved?

It is definitely being looked into.. stay tuned..

But also, monitor your VRAM usage (shift+Z) in flight... You'll see if it gets to the limit..

It can, you just have to set the P3D settings accordingly to your hardware and take a bit more care. In V4 you had the safety net from DX11 using shared RAM as VRAM (which induces stuttering). In DX12 there is this safety net not here anymore, a small price for getting better overall performance.

Thanks all. Any idea when we can expect HF2?

I based my system in what MSFS said would be the top end, so assumed it would be able to handle P3D5.

Not known.. be patient, and careful with your settings.

Your system can handle V5 just fine.. but not with "all sliders to the right".. 😉

Bert

Of course it can. But your system can't handle your settings. If you go too high with settings in MSFS it will also struggle to get enough fps.

FWIW, if you replicate the settings I shared, or something similar, I don't think you'll be terribly disappointed with how it looks and uses your hardware...here are some pics and a couple videos - the videos are shot with a software capture app, so has some stuttering in the vid itself and is downscaled to 1080p from 1440p, so they aren't perfect, but...it is a pretty good visual experience still and the smoothness far outperforms v4.5 for me at least. I don't have any stutters or 'pauses' in v5. The MD-82 vid was shot to assist another user with a problem, so feel free to skip all the control setup settings screens, blah blah...

Another huge thing is locking your frames. I use ncp to 30

I think that depends...in my case is totally different. I had DXGI twice, twice and my vRam was at 2.7/3.1GB or something. So out of blue basically. So not sure what to tell you. Yes, settings are somewhere in the middle more or less. I use FFTF and as far as I can see that helps me a lot at "heavy"  airports. And my NCP is at default and ever since then I am free of pauses and heavy stutters. Very smooth and happy. And now I am using 4XSSAA so far so good.
