There's nothing wrong with calling it "bad code."  I remember hearing the phrase in the Pentagon in 1976 from a guy who had been a programmer for many, many years, predating COBOL.  "Hm, sounds like we've got some bad code in there."

Exactly nothing wrong with that... But hey what do I know after 30 years and going as an IT professional 🤣

Not related to the topic, but I can't help reacting to this: how amazing I was just watching this yesterday evening for the first time!

This may be just a preference nowadays. I know the Aerofly folks have a similar aversion to dll's etc, and the stated reasoning has a lot to do with seeing what several years of random developers doing their own thing did to the speed and stability of FSX/P3D......

Trying to lock out poor quality programmers and their addons usually has the side effect of locking out exceptional quality programmers and their addons as well. Which is why PMDG is porting their birds to Aerofly oh wait oops not 🙂 .

I guess we're going to have to take a day off and learn WASM now. 😄

They are not making anything for X-plane either.

And I still don't care. 😋

Cool, a Revox reel to reel!  I've got the same model stored away somewhere.

As for the rest... who cares? 😄

Exactly.....!

To Rob:

My comment about not caring, was in regards to Pmdg and Aerofly.....

Moving on... As far as bad code, I hope one doesn't need to join the lofty ranks  of programming to guess that when Hal refuses to open the pod bay doors, something has gone badly wrong, even if you couldn't in a million years find or name the exact error causing the problem......

Or, in this case to observe that while it might take someone far more knowledgeable to fix the apparently longstanding issue, it was a lowly janitor with a flashlight in the basement, that found the big rat chewing on the wires.

I used process monitor because I had a suspicion/hunch that panned out.

It took me a while to look at what seemed to be happening, gather some evidence and finally report it exactly because I was concerned it might be dismissed without even being looked at carefully because I didn't have a proper "title."

In the end, I got over that because possibly helping the people reporting the issue was more compelling than feeling foolish if I was wrong. Fortunately for me, the Orbx developer/programmer I contacted was super gracious and professional, and all about confirming and fixing the problem.

I don't know how they define "IT Professional" in your part of the world, but typically Software Development/Engineering isn't related to IT.  Information Technology is about managing applications and capacity planning and redundancy planning and security planning but it is NOT about designing and coding applications and deployment strategies (although IT will have their input on some aspects of software development).  Software Engineers are the ones that design/code the applications an IT professional would manage.  I've been writing code both professionally and on my spare time since 1981, the draw is that to this day I'm always learning something new, maybe not better, maybe not more efficient, but new and "different".  WASM is relatively new and not used much currently and has limited scope.

Cheers, Rob.

Thanks for the explanation Rob I didn't had a clue 😜 don't tell my employer when coding lol

Apology but your remark is to someone who is working since 1987 in ICT and your remark is a bit condescending...

To add bad code in the sense from the word doesn't exist, but more objective question to ask is if the code lives up to the requirements. (that was more what I mend to say)

I leave it at that, but you missed the point! I'm not going to debate this further on a public forum...

Have fun Rob

Well I guess if you feel my comment was condescending it was taken to that level by your comment.  My point was in response to the on-going and frequent references to "bad code" which is non sequitur.

Cheers, Rob.

So.... is your intent to try and discourage people from using a common (and generally innocuous) phrase, on a worldwide forum?

Seems legit, and your use of the phrase non sequitur may even technically apply.

Pursued beyond a certain point however, other terms start coming into play as well, including the one used by awf and continuing on to the one i'm thinking of, which is "Counterproductive."

Rob has never done payroll. 🙂  I was maintaining and enhancing the payroll system for a company with over 100 employees in multiple states in 1983.  One of the things I did was write and add the code for what became the 401(k) tax deferred savings program, which among other things had different rules for different states.

One thing about payroll is that getting it wrong is not an option.

Boy, that's the truth. Compensation and anything dealing with financial services, especially since 2008. Not that we cared any less prior to 2008, but the extra government oversight has...how do I put this nicely...encouraged an abundance of controls to ensure there is zero tolerance for error. No pressure.

So, do you have to have a degree to be qualified as a software engineer? I have 25+ years of multi-disciplinary information technology experience including but not limited to software development. I must admit, "Software Engineer" does sound much more impressive than simply IT professional. I'll have to add that to my list of titles 😜

Who's website? If you are talking about the shell of a web store with nothing for sale? Eh, that's not really a fair assessment of a person's body of work.

Good question. 🙂  Typical conversion rate for new hires was that two years of school was equivalent to one year experience.  When I had 8 years experience I was applying for jobs that specified not only a 4 year degree but a 3.6+ GPA.  No one ever asked me about a degree.

In Texas you're not allowed to call yourself an engineer unless you are required to be licensed by the state and bonded.  I'm not a software engineer, I'm a computer programmer.  Or programmer/analyst.  Or whatever.  I can take a project from a set of requirements to a finished product.  Sometimes the requirements are really vague. 🙂 I prefer getting my hands dirty in code to high level management.  I have also worked on large programming teams and know what goes on there.

The last time I looked there were two airports for sale.  The images looked really, *really* good... until you realized they were from Google street view.  It's been that way for 7 months.  I wanna see screen shots of the actual product.

You can get some idea of what I can do if you google M1TP2 Hookins.  My first project after I retired.

Long ago, I was  working in a poor socialist country. The State foodstore had a very nice street window with tin cans carrying appetizing labels. That was for the show. The cans were empty and not for sale, the store had not much beyond rationed basic staple. But with the can on the front they could call themselves a  grocery.
