Consider the Split Flaps of a DC-3 for example. These do not alter the curve of the wing or increase wing area, they drop a lower portion on the underside of the wing, but the upper surface curve remains unchanged, which for this type of flap, theoretically goes completely against that notion of flaps altering the wing curve or increasing wing area, to increase lift. How these work is purely by deflecting air downwards which therefore utilises the principle of Newton's Third Law of Motion: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction, which forces the wing the opposite way, i.e. upwards.

Don’t split flaps also increase the lift of the wing by causing the high pressure zone under the wing to slow down even more, thus causing a larger pressure differential to the low pressure air moving faster over the top of the wing thereby causing more lift? Sort of like a wing in ground effect?

At least there is no need for discussions on real airplanes :). They work because reality and natures proves they have been engineered right.

Nope, I have very much respect to the engineers that have created planes that can fly.

I own the Gladiator and the stick's precision allows me to fly smoothly without any adjustment to curves or deadzones. It's really superior.

I mean considering both of those are large aspects of aviation I think they were right to invest heavily in them compared to study level aircraft. If the world itself is not well simulated what’s the point of having a very in depth aircraft? There will always be 3PD’s who make study level planes, it takes a massive company with huge assets like bing maps to make the whole world VFR accurate...
