Still worried about the flight model ... how planes move

Featured Replies

One glaring issue is that we dont have a replay function yet. Most of the time I see people inside their cockpit, and that can give the impression that the bobbing around bit is too pronounced perhaps. Other times when they fly in 3rd person view, they tend to forget to fly the airplane and look at all the sights. A replay function is hopefully coming soon because it will help with evaluation of all sorts of things.

You might be right that the flight model is off, but I'm not so sure. What is what (ie what is the flight model, what is the airplane, and what is the pilot and hardware setup) is difficult to say most times.

Is that about correct when it comes to the gist of it?

On pitch stability, yes. But somewhat disagree on stick movement. If it was just that then inputs would have to be modest for quite a reaction, but there are tons of videos where the user is barely moving the stick at all and there is still a bouncing up and down in pitch which is not caused just by inputs but is inherent to the stability of the aircraft. So it is not just the sensitivity of the stick or even the "curve" adjustments they are making The other big factor for me is the obvious indication that inertia levels are in most of the smaller aircraft absurdly low. They are so low that most of the single engined GA aircraft are twitching around roughly similar to a small RC aircraft a hundredth of the mass.

You'd have to increase the inertia, by double, treble or quadruple to get a believable movement. Particularly in yaw and pitch. I'm truly baffled that people can watch the more lively smaller aircraft and believe that their ridiculously jerky movements are at all plausible.

Andreas (or is that your husband?) it's funny, with me it was just the opposite. Inside the cockpit I have this feeling much less, and bobbing around is OK, simulating some turbulence. With me it's in outside view, mainly when looking from behind the plane, that I think the abrupt tail movements (also the tiny ones) and the abrupt heading or attitude changes of the planes looked like they lacked inertia. To me that is. It's up to Asobo to agree or disagree.

Woah ... Passive aggression. Love it !

One of the reasons this thread is still open is that generally people are reasonably respectful of others and are addressing the subject, not insulting the person. For this thread to continue being open then what you describe as passive-aggressive is a necessary Voltairian enlightenment approach to argument, which is to tolerate others' points of view while expressing your own. That is not passive-aggressive. It's being civilised.

That is a very interesting point. The stabilizer is often moving up and down (by the way, I obviously had a brain fart when talking about the nose. Of course a large part of the problem with the nose bobbing stems from the stabilizer in the rear). It does look pretty unstable, and I was wondering if that is really how the GA fly. I don't know because I never flew a small airplane (nor a big one for that matter), and I never took the time to study their movement through the air.

By the way, I am Andreas, and my husband is called Marko. Or "the Marmot" when I'm so inclined 😉

Hehe here we go again.  No, I'm Andreas. My husband is actually called Marko. Or the Marmot when I'm so inclined 😉

I'm glad you could still smile Andreas. I hope I've not offended you, never intended to. I think I read 'the Marmot' also flies?

Hehe, yeah ... I guess it does ...

Of course not, I didn't think for a second you meant anything wrong. Just made me smile 🙂

This video just released on YT, and it shows this bobbing up and down movement of the nose of a 747 on final. He is handflying. Is this realistic? I cant remember ever seeing a 747 dash cam ever showing this bobbing:

Remember all those complaints about "flying on rails"?  I suspect this is how MSFS fixed it.

It looks to me like Asobo took the very subtle random movements in FSX/P3D and exaggerated them.

I dont know, man. That's a 738, and it's obviously pretty gusty, and it's free hand filming. The camera isn't mounted, so it's difficult to see whats really going on. However, I did find this video that I do actually see a bit of that nose up down movement on the 744 coming in at jfk:

It doesn't seem as pronounced as in the sim though.
