X-Plane 11 vs. FS2020: Visuals

Yeah, I've just watched the TBM video of Squirrel... oh boy...

The autopilot wobbles around on VNAV, the pushback has some ugly quirks (animation, handling), the ATC got bugged and so on...

There's some serious work ahead of ASOBO...

AP is a known issue. They keep saying they are fixing it. We'll see on the 18th.

I'm 70.  Video games are my life... would you rather watch TV? 😄

My first flight simulator was a cardboard box, instruments were jar lids with a lump of clay at the bottom and a toothpick...

Today it's MSFS.

Ha, in the end of the 80s we had rolling canvases, that created the illusion of a moving world, only that there were no real collissions on that :/.

I watched a video the other day showing group flying and within a couple minutes I noticed the default airport at Hope, BC was not as good as XP, that there were mismatched ortho tiles, and that those stupid dirt balls like in FSX were flying off the wheels.

I wondered, why am I seeing those dirt balls?  Which someone corrected with a nice freeware adjustment.  Those dirtballs flying off the wheels came from FSX and earlier so why would they be in the new sim....yet there they were.

Do perhaps your comment explains, whatever, built on top of FSX means.

Link to the video, because MSFS currently doesn't have those effects at all. I'd be interested to see what the context is.

I'm thinking this comparison video it not that relevant.

While MSFS will come out of the box with ortho and lidar buildings and such we have yet to see the flaws of tiles not matched or whatever.  I'm sure it will be good.

However that comparison stuff is sort of useless...I have beefed up my XP11.5+ and fly in LV16+ ortho with overlays and have 100s of addon freeware airports along with the massive growing list of gateway free stuff.  My visual flight experience is far superior than that video posted in OP.

I just have to say that I don't think it's automatically fair to compare an xplane with decked out ortho and addons (and thus hours of your time downloading and managing those) to an out of the box MSFS. So if there are free addons that just puts cherries on top all over MSFS then what will you do? Normally you compare default to default. All decked out in ortho xplane 11 is not default.

I didn't feel like the video in the OP was misleading. I don't have time to download gigabytes of scenery before i jump in flying. I have some scenery for areas that I fly a lot, but when I just jump in and "go somewhere", I dont pre-plan by researching scenery and downloading that before i fly. In my book that methodology is pretty hardcore, and again, not fair to compare with default MSFS that is still in beta.

I've seen that in one video.  It turns out that the old FSX effects files are in MSFS but most are not being used.

In fact, there are still a lot of basic effects that have not even appeared yet in MSFS, like wing vortices, contrails, tire smoke.........

Its a work in progress.

But it sounds like a lot work to get you there on XP.

MSFS2020 customers will just have to pay $100+, and get it stock. So yeah, I think the comparison is relevant.

Mismatched tiles are rare, which is why you aren't seeing them in all the preview vids. They exist (or did in the early alphas), but I've yet to see one in the beta.

What's driving your overlays? OSM? What regions are you playing in? How much hard drive space is it taking? How long did it take to make them? I'm a fan of Ortho4XP, but I often find XP11 players gloss over the very real limitations of it.

Yes it does.

Starting at the 6 minute mark, around there, flying dirt balls just like our of FSX.

AND, check out the 11:50 mark in the above posted video, grossly mismatched tiles.

I'm not saying that I don't think MSFS is better, worse or anything else....its just not perfect, there are flaw and I haven't even experienced it yet.

First I've seen it and it doesn't happen when they are on the sandbar. I don't know if it's an old effect coming through only on certain surfaces. Most effects are not working at all right now. I don't see it as a big problem.

Hmmmmmmm..... I saw those while flying and thought nothing of it. Seems a pretty standard effect for the given situation.

I'm curious. What do you want it to look like?

Yeah, they must be under heavy pressure right now. Let's see what gets fixed until release.

My feeling tells me they should've took an additional half year for polishing & bug fixing.

I think it's got more to do with how the AP is reacting to the environment and not the AP functionality itself. That would explain why every plane suffers the same thing only after the beta was released. Maybe a change in the weather modelling is what caused it? But I'm speculating.

Edited by bonchie

In actuality, I'm more surprised at how well it all works. When I think about real-time NavBlue planes flying through the MeteoBlue weather over the Blackshark AI created scenery with planes connected via Vatsim......

Then I add in ATC which after decades of effort, other sims still have not gotten right, then add multiplayer....

Then Add an unprecedented world streaming system......

Then add never before seen clouds (which have to work seamlessly with Meteoblue.....)

Takes a breath.....

Not even mentioning the water, grass, 3D trees, whatever their height....

Asobo/Microsoft are doing so many groundbreaking, innovative things all at once, it seems almost criminal to criticize too hard without giving them the time to pull things together.

Time that we gladly give/gave our other sims.....

Its not even out yet.
