The London problem..

Featured Replies

This is the kind of thing that makes me useless in a pub quiz. Half of the questions are usually about music or bands, and I know next to nothing about both of them. If only they would ask more questions about astronomy, orbital mechanics, and comets!

I think you might need to improve either your research or your geography 🙂 most of those you list are not from London or anywhere near it. For example: Motörhead's Lemmy was from Stoke-on-Trent, Led Zeppelin's Bob Plant is a Brummie, he was born in West Bromwich, The Police's Sting is a Geordie, drummer Stewart Copeland is a Yank, he's from Virginia, and their guitarist, Andy Summers, is actually another Northerner, he's from Poulton-le-Fylde.

On 12 January 1977,[13] Sting relocated to London and, on the day of his arrival, sought out Copeland for a jam session.[12]

Curved Air had recently split up and Copeland, inspired by the contemporary punk rock movement, was eager to form a new band and join the burgeoning London punk scene.

On 1 May 1977, The Police released on Illegal Records their debut single "Fall Out," recorded at Pathway Studios in Islington, North London

Ergo, IMO, a London band.

Do we need to be parochial about where band members originate from? Do we call AC/DC a Scottish band? Should Queen be known as hailing from Tanzania? Is Coldplay really from Devon, Hampshire or Scotland?

Ha! True, you can only be good in a quiz if the questions cover your area of expertise / knowledge.
To be fair to Alan, music appears to be his.

Actually, I didn't use it, I'm a music nerd lol. I met Lemmy a few times (ironically outside the Manchester Apollo), he was a top bloke. Andy Summers is one of my fave guitarists and personally I think the Police are the best three piece band ever. Summers is a Telecaster fan, like me, and until a few years ago (when it got nicked from a rehearsal room), I had a Tobacco Sunburst Tele with a Gibson PAF humbucker in the neck position pretty much identical to the one he played a lot in his Police days, eventually replaced it with a Thinline Tele, but still miss that other one!

Led Zep were my fave rock band when I was a kid, I nicked off school to go and see their second to last ever gig (1979) and Zep and Yarbirds guitarist Jimmy Page (who is a Londoner), was the guy who inspired me to get my first electric guitar - a Les Paul. Much of my musical style when I write stuff is akin to his playing in terms of chord structure, because I learned a lot by learning his songs (lots of D Sus chord shapes slid up the neck, and G9s, plus not using a plectrum etc), so I'll admit that is one thing I owe to a musical Londoner. 🤣 I even bought a vintage Harmony Sovereign acoustic guitar a few years back just because that's the same type as Page used for the acoustic parts of Stairway to Heaven. Now that really is nerdy lol.

Joking aside, I used to work in London a lot, around Soho near Ronnie Scots since that is the centre for the film industry (or at least it was until it moved to, yup, you guessed it, up north at Salford Quays), and really love the place (except for maybe the price of a beer), but it does annoy me when it gets all the attention in the UK. There's loads of places which are just as interesting, if not more so.

I gotta say if someone is hesitant to lay out 8 dollars, in fear that the thing for which you spent 8 dollars might be made redundant at some point in the future, this may not be the hobby for you.

But who are you to state what hobby someone should have based on their income?

I've got a good feeling about seeing Reunion Tower et al.  just a feeling though.  more than a feeling (yes you should be hearing Boston)

I don't think his statement was meant derogatory. I think most of us in the hobby know how fast the money goes out the window when it comes to addons...

Another great band (RIP Neil Peart earlier this year). Saw them in Manchester, very cool, even did one of their songs as the intro for one of my flight sim vids (song starts at 1:02)

The comment shouldn't be really made. It's no ones business really whether someone deems 8 dollars a waste if it's eventually going to be free.
