My not so medium sized city which sits right at the corner of one of the biggest continuous photogrammetry coverages overall is not included. Because that coverage is owned by Google, not by Microsoft... But I must admit that the AI did a pretty decent job in approximating the buildings on the image and guessing how they should look like. My house even has the correct roof layout with the two windows that go into my living room. Edited August 18, 20205 yr by Farlis

The author is also just speculating, mentions an interview with a "someone" fromt the DoD who said that the military did NOT ask any map services to censor images. But he does not cite his sources. So he just assumes that people at Bing prematurely started to censor military bases within Germany (Norvenich for example is also missing) and then stopped and then forgot to undo it.
August 18, 20205 yr That's what I figured. I know how erratic governments can be when it comes to national security and it often ends up making no sense. A company like Microsoft will always be risk averse and not rock the boat. FSX | DCS | X-Plane 11 | MSFS 2020 | IL2:BoX Favorite aircraft currently: MSFS Savage Cub

Germany has some of the strictest government regulations around Mapping software and services, therefore operations like BING will lack coverage of Germany. This is the downside to those rules and MS isn't to blame for that, Germans wanted privacy and this is a result of that. It will take a third party like ORBX to properly cover the area or BING Maps to update Germany if the government rules will allow that EDIT: I just noticed that the Google car is now allowed in Germany when it wasn't for over 10 years now, but it has only mapped a small portion of Germany, therefore a long way to go. BING Maps is probably in the same situation, hindered by government regulations and years away from catching up Edited August 18, 20205 yr by Matthew Kane Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me

Farlis, thanks for your feedback! Right, sources were missing. Meanwhile I did more research, updated the article and also added sources (but they are only in German):Why is Stuttgart Airport (EDDS) missing in Flight Simulator 2020?
August 19, 20205 yr Those things will be added with world updates (devs mentioned this will happen once per month or so). Also addons can fill up the „empty space“. Looking at bings, the new Istanbul airport doesn’t exist for it yet either. Also other funny thing I have found out: Even Aachen has photogrammetry, and Cologne doesn’t. Anyway, I was able to find my home in a small city located between both of these cities 😛

Nice writeup, thanks for that! From my experiences with government bureacracy, your theory sounds quite plausible. If someone would bother to ask whatever government agency is responsible for cases like that, I'm almost sure they wouldn't even remember ever having requested these areas to be blurred.

In fact, while planning my flights I use Google Maps to look at the airfield and the surroundings. SkyDemon (if you know it) even has Google Maps coordinates integrated and it works like a charm. Are Bing Maps differently regulated? Always thought the two are largely the same, where Bing was always the crappier version of Google Maps.
