August 18, 20205 yr Author Good news on Sensitivities. I'll tie that to the UI concerns again as I never once saw this anywhere. heheh Thanks to both of you. i7 8700K @4Ghz, EVGA RTX3080 Ultra, 32GB RAM, Two 2K displays. Alpha Yoke, Bravo Throttle Quadrant, CH Pedals.

I was hoping the new version wouldn't need this, but if it does, so be it. A far as the second comment, perhaps you're not familiar with how QA works. First impressions are worth a fortune in development. Sure, once I get used to the UI I might feel differently, but that's hardly the point. The point remains that I had to grasp at straws to try to figure out things and the best user interfaces do not have this issue. I didn't have this issue in FSX, P3D and, for the most part, in XP. The bottom line is that for new users this interface is far from optimal. I didn't know QA rested on a sample of one (or two, or three) user. Flight sim interfaces have always left a lot to be desired. I'd rather Asobo spend time fixing incoming bugs in the core sim experience, and not waste effort on the interface, which you'll get used to in a couple of days.

It is atrocious and unintuitive and just not pleasant to use.

Not sure if that's accurate now as the waves around Atlantic City showed up as crests that never moved. Is there a setting to enable an animation for this? A beta/alpha tester slammed me for this 1 month back, here on these forums. I suggested the waves look baked in the photo (like XP11 ortho), to which he snarly replied, they're not and they are all active waves. Well how wrong was he....!

It's not perfect, but what's here is evolutionary and simply incredible. Asobo and MS should be quite proud of the work done here. Amazing. That said, here are the thing that occur to me so far: 1. No Replay feature. That's a bit of a shock. It's something a number of us use quite a bit to analyze our flights, landings, etc. Being able to see our landing from all angles is rather helpful in learning and in enjoyment. 2. I could have sworn I saw waves crashing in various videos. Not sure if that's accurate now as the waves around Atlantic City showed up as crests that never moved. Is there a setting to enable an animation for this? 3. The UI needs work on several fronts as I found it less than intuitive in many areas. Some of those will be noted below. 4. The Control screen was initially a COMPLETE mystery to me. I had zero clue how to use it and had to fumble through an hour of mistakes before it made half sense and then later I got it about 80%. This screen needs a tutorial all by itself or at least real Help. I tried to grasp how to enter CTRL + F into the Keyboard section and it took a long time to realize how exactly to type that in. I kept trying to use the interface to enter it. Nope. Same for joystick axis, etc. It wasn't clear that you could, for example, move the right rudder pedal in the top box and then "Validate" that. The top box doesn't seem obviously described to be able to handle that. 5. I went to set up a flight and came up empty at first. I went to the Departure Airport input and typed in KPHL. Nothing came up. I typed Philadelphia. Nothing came up. I had to use the map to select KPHL. Later it was suddenly available in the box to be found. Did I force that into the list by using the map? No idea. Every airport should be in that dialog. Was this a glitch? 6. What the heck is the Basic Controls screen for? First of all it's missing two of the most popular products for a mass of sim users: CH Products peripherals. Thus, my CH rudder pedals and throttle quadrant just show up as big question marks (they're getting retired once Honeycomb releases the Bravo and Charlie) and my Honeycomb Alpha yoke shows up bit it's just a picture (and a slightly incorrect one at that with the left most switches shown in backwards colors). Of what value is that while flying? I don't get it. Now if I could mouse over a button and have it point out that Button X does function Y, great! Right now it's useless as far as I can tell. 7. There needs to be a way to set sensitivities and dead zones like we had with FSUIPC. My rudder pedals show with a variable amount of brakes always set. I can't set a zero level or curve to resolve that. Speaking of that, the sensitivities are all too high. I have to flight the 152 and 172 all the way down the runway given the variable toe brake situation. I've always relieved to just get off the ground. 8. I had one 10 second freeze during my first flight from KPHL to KACY. Not sure what happened. Everything just froze and then resumed on its own. I'll assume server overload. 9. Here's my biggest one and this one is, for me, MAJOR. At several points I thought my controls just stopped working. I'd turn the yoke and nothing would happen. I'd move the throttle up and down. Nothing I did had any impact on the plane. Then I realized what this was. ANYTIME I was in another window like the Map or the ATC the controls all stop working. This is absolutely a horrible idea. The flight controls should work regardless of where else I might be. This nearly caused me to crash more than once and then I had to remember, "Oh, right, I was zooming the map a bit ago. Not sure how this didn't come up during Alpha and Beta but it's not fun to deal with. It appears that this happens if you have these elements on a second monitor, but if that's still unacceptable. 10. All controls including UI items should be shown under Controls, not just flight-related items. If there's a keyboard control for something (like FPS display) it should appear here. 11. The Menu pointer at the top of the screen that appears when you move the mouse needs an option to turn that off. It was distracting continually. I know where to move the mouse to bring it up so let me hide it please. 12. I'd love an option to by-pass the opening logos. Watching such splash screens gets old fast. I doubt the devs watch these every load and suspect there's a command line option or such to skip them. What is it? Again, I don't want anyone getting the impression that I dislike the effort here. Nothing could be further from the truth. I was a QA professional for a long time (and a games columnist for the major press way back) so I take the perspective that the good stuff is all great, but we need to focus on what needs work and why, so if this comes off harsh, that's not my intention. Asobo has a ton of stuff I'm sure they're already working on and I cannot wait to see what's next. I can't imaging going back to other sims at this point, I just hope some of the above gets some attention somewhere down the line. In the SDK you have a command line option to use, so aloading is much faster without all the splash screens. In DevMod you also have a lot of options, Aircraft switching, Teleport etc.

August 18, 20205 yr Broadly speaking, I agree with most of your points. Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here
August 18, 20205 yr Author I'm still not sure the toe brakes are right on the rudder pedals as when I press them and watch under Sensitivities (now that I know it's there) the little ball rides up the line and when I reach halfway on the pedal it then rides back down the line to the bottom as I reach the end up pushing. That seems wrong. Another confusing thing here is I have ZERO idea why there are two boxes in this Control area for each peripheral menu. Is there some X to Y setting? Where's the header to at list hint what these two boxes are for? Is it so I can have two buttons or switches to do the same thing? Why do I have to guess at this? This can be easily addressed a number of ways. I was blown away just now flying out of Philly in the 172 and looking around. So much better than any other sim, though still far from perfect. The skyline is oddly from about 3 years ago or so as you can tell by the skyscrapers and my home area (in South Jersey) shows construction also from about that time so I'm a bit confused about what Bing data is being used. One would have thought it be a bit newer than that. It's also funny at times. The USS New Jersey (a WWII-ear battleship) is now a floating museum that's in the Delaware river and somehow it has an outbreak of trees dead center on its deck. It'd be cool if there was a portal for us to report these sorts of things. Also noticed countless objects that are partially submerged that should be above the water, generally decks and walkways along with lots of boats. Still infinitely better than any other option. i7 8700K @4Ghz, EVGA RTX3080 Ultra, 32GB RAM, Two 2K displays. Alpha Yoke, Bravo Throttle Quadrant, CH Pedals.
