Orbx True Earth Florida

I made videos from ORBX TE Florida in V5 and from MSFS vanilla. MSFS is 4K, P3D is HD (downsampled from 4K). It's maybe not a fair comparison, it's just videos from how I play the 2 sims.

WOW!

I gotta say MSFS still looks a lot better to me.  For some reason the P3D cockpits look too 2d and the terrain cartoony colored compared to MSFS!

Thanks for posting!

This is a good product.   I had MSE prior to this release and this release is way better.   Last night was Somewhat of a slide show approaching Miami froM the Keys.... but at night and Miami is understandable.

If you're goal is to fly way lower than the FAA would ever let you as you buzz NASA's launch pad, MSFS is the game for you.

That's not what P3D is designed for.

If you want P3D v5 looking good, you also need to turn EA on (which seems to be off in the vids). Does look cartoony without that, turn it on and there's some great-looking clouds and haze to be had.

From past experience, P3D ortho ends up looking better than MSFS ortho once you're flying at the sort of levels that planes fly at. I've been cruising in the A2A Comanche at around 4000 feet this evening, and P3D looks great at that altitude with EA on. I generally prefer the look to what I get out of MSFS, although there are parts of the world where MSFS's objects will shine.

Then you get up to 30,000+ feet, and P3D is a definite winner. MSFS struggles at altitude in airliners because it's trying to stream - the clouds are interesting (if "cartoon-like"), but the terrain itself is mush.

Add to that, P3D lets you experience the scenery in a systems-rich plane (A2A, Maddog, PMDG etc), plus VR if you want it.

I've ordered and am downloading now.

I will have a lot of work getting my payware airports working with it. But the end game seems promising. I just have so many Florida airports

What's EA?  Is it an exclusive setting for V5?

Still running V4.5 and agree P3D does better at ALT.

E.A. stands for Enhanced Atmospherics.  TrueSky is another name for it.  If you turn E.A. on...you are turning on the TrueSky implementation.   P3D's Orbx TE Florida looks great 5,000 or higher.

Note, EA is still in beta via the initial release of P3Dv5. LM are looking to make improvements  which I am sure will come in the next update based on the user feedback and experience so far.

OK, I've had a chance to have a quick fly. My thoughts? Actually, not that impressed. I was disappointed with Orbx last release (Northern Cali), and my initial impressions here are the same - a product rushed to market, that doesn't really meet modern standards.

1. Jagged watermasking, with ugly low-res orthoscenery.

AtWMoMD.jpg

2. Here's one of my test airports - Tri Co 1J0. Orthoscenery res/quality is pretty dreadful. Note that I've got saturation turned up, so don't worry if it's a bit too green for you:

hEPzZLj.jpg

3. Miami. Most of the buildings work fine, but you'll notice a few with basically black textures standing out here. A PBR issue, perhaps? There's also one or two with seriously flickering textures. Plus, some of the airport objects do shimmer markedly, something that I note with some of the (older?) objects in the Orbx library.

Overall, it's OK. I'm going to replace the ortho right now and see if that improves the experience, as I don't think I'd enjoy low-and-slow flying over this.

On the plus side, I'm getting 80 FPS with the F-35 with a lot of objects on the ground. I still love P3D for its VR and TrueSky/Ortho combo up high, and Orbx's photoscenery looks pretty solid at flying altitiude.

OK, back to flying now. Cheers!

What is the resolution of the photoscenery supposed to be? In addition to the jagged edge of the coastline beach, I note that the pond at your test airport also seems to have a very jagged outline....
