What is too hot for RTX2080 Ti?

Featured Replies

Have an i9-9900K overclocked to 5 GHz with hyperthreading enabled.  Have a RTX2080 Ti with 11GB VRAM.  My video settings in MSFS 2020 are set as per the graphics configuration recommendations in the guide on the official forum which are close to being the same as the "high" preset config.

My CPU cores hit the low 50C range which seems pretty good, but the GPU gets to 81, 82, 83C routinely.  Is that too hot for the card?

Forgot to mention the monitor is 4K (using 4K resolution) with G-Sync, and I have HAGS enabled in the OS.

No, it's on the warm side, but the 2080Ti will throttle starting at 89 deg C.  I prefer lower than that, though...personally I shoot for ~70 deg C.

Do you have a custom fan profile set up?  Are the fans spinning at 100% at those temps, as they should be?

I don’t have a custom fan profile because never really needed it. P3D barely made the card sweat.

Any recommendations or best practices on what to use and how to setup?

My 2080ti (MSI Gaming X Trio) tops out at 70C while playing. To get that when gaming I use MSI Afterburner and set the Fan Speed to Auto. Basically this runs the fan at a speed equal to the temperature so when it tops out at 70C the fan is going at 70%. Then when I stop gaming I switch that off and the fans will stop completely as my 2080ti fans in stock mode don't run when < 60C.

That is a little warm for my liking. I would also recommend a custom fan curve to get those temps down. Mine never goes above 72c.

My specs are in my signature.  Carry over 1070 TI still and none of that.  My new system's case, cooler, and direction of airflow seem frigid.  Never hear the cooler.  The PSU is quiet, cool, and totally isolated in the lower case by shrouding.  No OC.  Have not found the need.  My MFS settings are 120 on all the sliders and a mix of med to high on other settings.  Waiting for a 3080 16 GB or 20 GB if such emerges.  Meantime I am coolin it.

My GTX 1080 ran P3D at around 75-80C and sometimes would peak to 85C with no problems. I ran in 4K also. Your ambient room temperature plays a big part in your CPU/GPU/CASE temps as well.

My ambient room temp is about 26C.

I’ll play with fan profiles tomorrow. I always assumed the video card BIOS controlled the cooling fan and have never played around with it or used 3rd party software with any video cards. Maybe it’s just not efficiently cooling.

The stock fan setup on my 2080ti was not as efficient. If I didn't switch MSI Afterburner on the temps would get up to around 80C when under load which was a little high for my liking.

You don't need to mess around with the fan profiles in BIOS if you don't want to get too technical about it. Just open Afterburner click on the cog wheel beside Fan Speed and then click on the Auto button on the same line and job done - that produces a linear curve that matches the fan speed % to the temperature between 40-80C. If you want you can dig into the curves to tweak to your preference - I think I lowered the fan speed to 30% up to 30C just to make it a bit quieter at the start and then it went linear after that up to 80C. My card doesn't go over 70C with this setting.

WOW....amazing! Loaded up MSI Afterburner and now my temps are in the high 60s to low 70s C.  Much better.  Thanks everyone for the guidance!

One question.  Why isn't nVidia setting up cards to cool more efficiently without the need for 3rd party utilities?  If I wasn't more curious, I would have just gone along with the card at 83C and probably done damage eventually.

Well in my case it's MSI and they're balancing temps vs. fan speed noise. I guess they're ok with the fans running at a lower speed and therefore quieter while letting temps hit 80C. Those temps are on the high side but still ok - they're not going to break the card but they're getting close to the point where the card will throttle back. Personally I prefer to keep the card a bit cooler and take the higher noise level as I don't really notice it with headphones on as it's still not too loud overall.
