ORBX KSJC

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just got this as part of the sale.

I find performance horrible... wanted to get some reviews from other folks that have purchased and used it...

Also, the 3D grass is really low quality.

Looks like this is one of the lower quality releases by ORBX

reviews haven't been the greatest.  Personally, i found it to be just average.  Performance not great.  Poor DL.  Doesn't look the best.  Unless you love SJC I'm not sure I would recommend this one.

This probably would have saved you some money:

If an Orbx scenery doesn't come from a named developer, such as Jarrad Marshall, Marcus Nyberg, Ken Hall, Bill Womack, Rasha Tucakov or Misha Cajic, it will be very debatable whether they are worth buying.
A lot of the medium-sized UK and US airports have come from Gaya Sim or Orbx's newer UK-based development team and have very mixed customer responses towards them.

AMD Ryzen 5800X3D; MSI RTX 3080 Ti ; 32GB Corsair 3200 MHz; ASUS VG35VQ 35" (3440 x 1440)
Fulcrum One yoke; Thrustmaster TCA Captain Pack Airbus edition; MFG Crosswind rudder pedals; miniCockpit FCU; CPFlight MCP 737; Logitech FIP x3; TrackIR

MSFS; Fenix A320; A2A PA-24; HPG H145; PMDG 737-600; AIG; RealTraffic; PSXTraffic; FSiPanel; REX AccuSeason Adv; FSDT GSX Pro; FS2Crew RAAS Pro; FS-ATC Chatter

Every single one of the original ORBx UK airfields and airports (before they stopped making them due to lack of sales) were quality addons, but I was very disappointed when I purchased the ORBx (Gaya Simulations) version of EGPH Edinburgh. Poor texture quality on the terminal buildings (relative to previous ORBx releases), poor quality blends between aprons and grass, very dark (and sparsely detailed) lower sections of light poles (ie. the bits right in front of my VC windows), a few rather strange ground markings/taxiway lines, and really low resolution car parks. This was shortly after release, so I do not know if these issues have since been corrected.

I was interested in purchasing other large ORBx UK airports at the time, but this episode stopped me in my tracks.

This is my worst performing airport and I own the big complex ones... also got a NTDLL CTD after landing with the FSLabs (which I never get, I assume this is related to the performance as well)

Well at least it looks way better than the 2009 version by Imaginesim

Was going to get all UK biggies in the next sale, guess you are saving me money 🙂

Pity since I'm lacking UK airports and UK2000 looks outdated...

The regular huge discounts are the only redeeming feature of most ORBX products these days.

There are a couple of great ones but there’s a sea of mediocre products that didn’t go through any QA.

Sorry for resurrecting an old topic but it's relevant.

I've thought about this scenery for some time and was close to buying the ORBX version. Thank god I came here first.

Anyone have any thoughts about the ImagineSim version? Many airports for v4 can work with v5 with perhaps a tweak of the AFCAD and redirecting the installer. Their other airports are of high quality.

FWIW Ray, though I've never had the ImagineSim version, I was able to salvage my own experience with ORBX KSJC by disabling a particular scenery file, which contains a bunch of (...I presume poorly-optimized...) models of local offices/buildings. For ORBX KSJC owners, that file specifically is "3DM_buildings_NoCal_CABlg_1518_4424.BGL." There was some post on the Orbx forums ages ago where they acknowledged the performance issues and mentioned that it "had to do with the autogen," so after a bit of digging and testing I found this file to be the biggest culprit.

With that enabled, my P3Dv4.5 FPS were all over the place, jumping constantly from low to mid-20s. Disabling it gave me stability to actually use the airport, though it is already in a heavy performance area (especially if you have surrounding sceneries active). Of course it's annoying when you have to disable assets you've paid for. That said, I didn't notice any glaring holes of scenery objects by disabling this, and the (actual) autogen + other scenery files are more than sufficient for my own taste.

I'm in the middle of a flight so I can't jump into SJC to get more details for ya at the moment, but I'll try to circle back to that later today. I do have a partially-completed ADE project for ORBX KSJC that's on my list to post over at the AIG forums, so this might end up being enough inspiration for me to push this out the door soon.

@drobinho, many thanks for that helpful info. Given you have a decent PC and that rogue file has been identified I’m more confident the ORBX version will be fine. I can manage 30fps at all my airports with lots of AIG Ai present.

I always appreciate the effort people put into AIG plans. 👍

I would be interested in this as well. I live 1.5 hours from KSJC. Might be worth a try by removing the offending bgl.

I know what you mean...! My Bay Area roots pushed me to pursue a high fidelity trifecta for OAK/SFO/SJC, though that's definitely come with challenges. Anyways, did a little more poking around.

Running  v4.5 w/ ORBX NA NorCal (not TE), many local sceneries active (KHAF/KHAF/KSQL/KPAO/KSFO), and 100% AIG traffic, I get a stable ~30FPS with that file disabled. I'm sure that with V5 (and a newer CPU than my 10900k) you could push that higher. Enabling the file does add a few more scenery objects just to the northwest of the airport (none that I consider particularly critical), but it is indeed the culprit for stutters. When enabled & I remain static/unmoving the FPS are stable; but introduce any kind of speed or slew in the sim and performance immediately starts jumping from single digits to 25-30.

Here are a few screenshots which compare performance with enabling/disabling the file and call out the 3d objects removed by disabling the file: https://imgur.com/a/mBh9809

...and a relevant discussion thread on the Orbx forum archives, with a good bit dedicated to the file's compatibility with ORBX TE (unfortunately closed out after - falsely, imo - attributing it to autogen): https://forum.orbxdirect.com/topic/197869-sjc-long-frame-stutter/

Thanks for this. I'll give this a try today. I might even have KSJC but never installed it. May have been a sale going on

@drobinho, one think I noticed on the ORBX site for this airport is the recommendation that other scenery should be bought. I have no desire for Southern California. Will this airport blend in okay on it’s own or is the area enhanced with SC?
