Airports - Approach lighting systems

Featured Replies

I noticed KARB (small airport in Michigan) has sequenced strobe lights but according to FAA charts it is not supposed to have any.

While
KDTW and KJFK has no sequenced strobe lights (on my last test flights) and they should have them.

Also the
KJFK Canarsie lead-in flashers (from VOR CRI along the parkway) leading to runways 13L and 13R are not present.

Anyone seeing these problems and possibly at other airports?

Oh yeah.  And then we have runway edge lights on during the day (in good weather)...sigh

Ryan,

You are correct and I did not find any Pilot controlled lighting option either.

Only runway 24 has approach lights. https://youtu.be/Vwul__-XewQ?t=165

Is it done yet? When will it be released? Will it be freeware or payware? How much will it cost? Any updates on the progress? Will it work for Xbox? Can I be a beta tester? How's the performance in VR?

KARB is not supposed to have approach sequenced strobe lights?

I was looking at the FAA approach charts for the information on runway and approach lighting.

Has anyone come across a mod to deal with some of the global runway lighting issues, ie the lights on during the day, lead in strobes visible from unrealistic distances/angles etc?

Hopefully the now in alpha airport editor will be able to deal with the airport specific issues and those mods shared.

Airport lighting at default airports won't ever be accurate because that's data-dependent just like taxiways, which are all randomly designated instead of matching the real world.

Exactly.

@vonmar Until someone either makes a payware or freeware Ann Arbor Municipal we just have to live with it. All default airports will have generic lighting. Not sure why the ARB charts don't say anything about runway 24's ODALS lighting system (unless it was deactivated) but it is there. You can see in the video I posted. You can zoom in on google maps and see the light posts, and you can see them in the street view.

Huh, this is pretty intriguing. I doublechecked the the charts available on skyvector.com (validity summer 2019) and there is no mention of any ALS at all.

I think it is weird to downgrade an existing assets (unless for cost) - your video was from 2013 so it was obviously in operation back then.

The current best approach to 24 is the RNAV/GPS - with the second best a fairly offset VOR approach based on SVM VOR.

I could imagine that for the VOR approach back then the ODALS was a necessary asset. Possibly the VOR approach today has a higher minimum (629´ AGL, 1SM) so it isn´t necessary anymore.

The RNAV has a limit of 250´ AGL-1 and is perfectly straight in. So maybe they don´t need the ODALS anymore.

Cheers, Jan

Actually I thought your video was a recent flight.

Thanks Jan for getting the flight video date.

All the charts I have say MIRL and VASI-L for KARB 24 (activated on 120.3 when tower inop.).

What needs fixing at KGRR?

My thought is when the purchase is MSFS Deluxe Premium the airports that come with the sim (KJFK, KORD etc) should be up to date without the need for ADE.

Hello,

I have not tried ADE yet. Thanks for the link.

How did it work for you at KGRR?

What did you need to update at KGRR?
