MSFS or stay with x-plane?

Featured Replies

Hi all, please help.  I had MSFS awhile back but switched to x-plane about 3 years ago.

Now w/MSFS out, there is just a ton more of add-on’s I’m seeing everywhere I look, so that’s one big thing.

Second big thing is x-plane has NO actual add-on missions like MSFS had, with voice over, like actual missions.

Im a real world 172 recreational pilot & have exhausted all the training aspects that x-plane  offers & am now bored with just flying aimlessly. I really miss the exciting missions from MSFS. If the realism of the flight characteristics are close or the same as of x-plane, then why should I stay with x-plane? Any input I’d appreciate, thanks.

That question is virtually impossible to answer.

Maybe keep both like me.

I just use whichever one I want for a particular feature.  Such as the Zibo mod for Xplane, and MSFS for IFR flying.

Although I keep Xplane on the hard disk, I won't be spending any more money on it going forward, so it is costing me nothing.

Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind).

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

Intel 14900K in a Z790 motherboard with water cooling, RTX 4080, 32 GB 6000 CL30 DDR5 RAM, W11 and MSFS on Samsung 980 Pro NVME SSD's.  Core Isolation Off, Game Mode Off.

You have both? Doesn’t bog down your computer? Maybe you use MSFS on Steam as to not have it on your PC? Hmmm maybe i’ll look into that, thanks much.

The new simulator does not feature any structured missions either. I believe there are some freeware add-ons, but I'm not sure if they have voice-overs. Officially they will probably be coming at a later stage, but we do not know when.

Anyway, this question is impossible to answer indeed, you are the only one that can do so. I would recommend subscribing to one month of Xbox Game Pass for $1 (just remember to cancel the subscription before the month is up), so that you can decide whether the new simulator is for you. And of course, no harm in using both.

X-Plane has helicopters. And some incredibly well-developed (commercial) add-ons. X-Plane has adverse yaw and prop torque.

MSFS has pretty weather. Trees where they should be, grass, and 5-storey buildings on farms. The little GA things behave quite nicely in the mountains or in the lee of buildings. There are not yet a lot of add-ons available, but it will grow for sure.

Easy: get MSFS, it has a few features that are very good. In many respects it's a good level or two above X-Plane. In some behind. But it is pretty much good fun.

Thanks for the tip, ill prob try that. Just so much going on in the sim world it gets overwhelming.

Thanks, that’s what I’m hearing.  X-Plane apparently still come out on top on realism of the physics of the aircraft in flight & even the functionality of the cockpit controls, so I’ll have to think about this and prob wait to see what else comes out for XP.  I’d pay anything for at least one adventurous mission in XP, hopefully soon one comes.  Thanks again.

If I was you I would concentrate on just one sim. I also have P3D installed on one of my setups and rarely use it after MSFS was released back in August and installed here one month later. MSFS is the way to go, and there's a lot of freeware available to enjoy.

MSFS2020 Steam  // Rig: Corsair Graphite 760T Full Tower - ASUS MBoard Maximus XII Hero Z490 - CPU Intel i9-10900K - 64GB RAM - MSI RTX2080 Super 8GB - [1xNVMe M.2 1TB + 1xNVMe M.2 2TB (Samsung)] + [1xSSD 1TB + 1xSSD 2TB (Crucial)] + [1xSSD 1TB (Samsung)] + 1 HDD Seagate 2TB + 1 HDD Seagate External 4TB - Monitor LG 29UC97C UWHD Curved - PSU Corsair RM1000x // Thrustmaster FCS & MS XBOX Controllers

Pretty simple really:

  • XPLANE has better flight dynamics and more aircraft - so if you fly or in particular learning to fly a real world aircraft and need to reproduce a particular aircraft  it might be abetter option
  • MSFS represents the experience of flight far better, you can fly visual circuits and navigate VFR in areas you are familiar with - if you never or very rarely fly a real airplane it is probably a better option

Thanks Ed, yes I rather focus on one as it’s hard enough finding time for just one, I’m going to research this more before I do anything sudden.

To be honest, the only thing really stopping you from enjoying MSFS with no problems, is a 50 quid SSD installed on your computer to have it all fit there without clogging things up, after that, the sim itself is inexpensive and it is a great asset for replicating a typical Spam Can recreational pilot's experiences without the expense. There is no law saying you can't enjoy any and all sims, and they all have their merits, so grab a cheap SSD and dive in.

Thanks Chock, i’ll look into that, but I think my computer has a SSD, actually I know it does, a decent one I believe, but are you referring to like an additional one for extra storage space or something?

Yeah. For MSFS before it was released, I added another cheap 500Gb SSD to my computer so that I could have MSFS on that one, keep things tidy and have MSFS start up and load up a flight very quickly. It cost me 48 quid for the drive and it currently has 174Gb free with the Premium Deluxe version of MSFS installed on it, plus the scenery cache and a few payware add-on aeroplanes and airports, so it's doing the job.

That sounds like good solid advice.  I’m in-between. I’m a real world recreational pilot but there isn’t much more XP can offer me as far as teaching goes, so I think i’m going to move over to MSF.  Thanks for the advice it’s been helping me decide.

The best is to give it a try and decide...
