CTD with Radeon 5700 XT, becoming more frequent

Featured Replies

Do you guys cap fps in some way or is the GPU almost all the time at maximum load. For me everything runs fine now in VR since driver 20.9.1 roll-back and lowering the settings so MSFS can keep a 30 fps  and the GPU gets some relief.

Well, I am going to update to the latest driver today... after an odd thing happened in sim. FPS went to 17, and the GPU usage was going from 5% to 80% every few seconds... very odd. We will see what happens. I have NO issues with the 5700XT in any other games or applications... unfortunately the sim is what I use most.

This is happening since the UK update. FYI nothing to do with drivers or specific graphics cards. Refer to the FS2020 forums if you want to read up on it. We are pending acknowledgement and a fix for this issue.

Interesting. Everything nice and smooth after the driver update. Solid 40FPS... trucking along. So far so good.

Thanks for letting us know. After the UK update I noticed at EGLC looking to the west my frames dropped to 10 while my GPU almost fell asleep. Looking east again all was normal. The same update also did something to certain taxiways where the bumpmap seems at a very low resolution. At night with taxi light in VR it looked like a mud track. I saw the same in a U-tuber video.

Here's the most appropriate thread in the MSfs 2020 forums. If you are experiencing this issue please vote it up for escalation.

Thanks

Summary explanation of the issue.

On a normal properly balanced system the GPU is the limiter and it sits at 99-100% usage for the most smooth experience. Since the last major update a performance bug randomly kicks in and causes the GPU to downclock by a substantial amount for it to be noticed in the framerate. (The CPU does not experience any increase in in load which would indicate "limited by mainthread" and the gpu is left starving) Rather the system is indicating "limited by manipulator" in developer mode according to people who monitor their systems using that method.

I monitor my system by using the built in monitors in the Radeon software or Hardwareinfo64 which also clearly displays the GPU slacking off when the bug hits.

System was working bug and stutter free before this issue with quite a bit of resource reserve so this isn't a reserve or "lack of" issue on my side. System actually still runs smooth for the most part till the bug randomly hits.

If you don't mind terribly could you use the Radeon performance monitor / Switch on the fps overlay and go do a 1-2 hour flight and see if at some point the original issue you described reoccurs. If it doesn't occur ill upgrade the drivers as well tonight and test for myself.

Cheers

Interesting. Thanks for the explanation. Had no idea. After the driver update I did 1 hour at stable FPS, in fact felt smoother than ever (probably placebo). Started at the same airport that I had previously encountered the issue. I will probably get an hour again tomorrow, and will report back again.

How is everyone getting on with driver timeouts now? And what driver are you using?

I haven't dared updating since rolling back to 20.8.3. Not a single driver timeout since then, and only a few CTDs, along with a couple of reboots (usually when I have an overnight flight going so little chance of pinning down a reason). It's the most stable the sim has been for months, so I'm not incline to make any changes.

OS:     Win11 Home; Mobo: Asus TUF Gaming Z690-Plus WiFi D4; CPU: Intel i5-12400 (Alder Lake) 4.4 GHz
RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR4 64Gb (4x16GB) 3600 MHz; GPU:  MSI Radeon RX 5700XT [8GB]
SSD:  Corsair Force MP510 (for OS);  2x 1TB & 1x 2TB Sabrent Rocket Nvme PCIe 4.0 (one for sim, two for addons)
HDD:  Seagate 3TB (Data); Seagate 1TB (Programs), ASUS TUF Gaming VG32VQ1B Curved 31.5" monitor, 1440p, 38Mbs ethernet

Fulcrum One Yoke, Honeycomb Bravo throttle, Thrustmaster Airbus TCA sidestick & throttle, Logitech Pro pedals, Xbox wireless gamepad (1st gen)

funny this pop'd up, I just had my first timeout using the 20.11.2 of course after a beautiful 1.5 hour flight on final doing an NDB approach landing my Arrow with OnAir.

Edit: BTW This was my first timeout but also installed my first addon in the community folder, the Arrow.

Running the most current driver for awhile now, no issues.

Current driver here as well. no CTD's at all since Sim update 3

I used the CTD Vaccine and it has been almost a week and a half and not one CTD. Before the vaccine I was getting at least 2 a day. I fly normally around 3-4 flights a day .

I switched to the latest over the weekend and had two Driver Timeouts, the second after applying the CTD vaccine so I'm back on 20.10.1

I update to  the latest a couple of weeks ago on a brand new PC, and immediately had two timeouts right in a row. I rolled it back to previous version.
