how to find out runways in use at current airport?

Featured Replies

Normally you would get this info from ATIS. But since I shut-off the built-in ATC, how can I find this information out?

Does the built-in ATC give you accurate departing and arrival runways based on the real world weather in the sim?

If u use Little Nav Map there you can see closed runways at the Airports, but only inside the Sim - i realy don`t know.

cheers 😉

I've been directed by ATC to the wrong runway once in a while, with the windsock showing a distinct tailwind. Little Navmap shows the preferred runway based on wind direction, but AFAIK it uses an online weather source. I think weather data cannot be read via simconnect (yet) so any third party software will need to use online real weather. Currently, live weather isn't always accurate (or working at all) in the sim so that's a problem.

I actually use an app on my phone called StationWX.

If it's a big airport, go on flight radar 24, set it to satellite View and zoom in to see which runway is being used.

I usually check the FlightRadar24 from my phone.

I usually use FlightRadar 24. Just zoom-in near the airport and see where planes are arriving to or departing from. If the airport has few flights or there aren't arriving/departing flights right now, you may just playback any recent arrival/departure to check the plane's path.

Flightradar is great but the app is nice in that you can bookmark airports, there is a limit of 10 in the free version I think but it's hardly ever an issue having to remove/add a new one.  It's quick and intuitive and if you tap the airport you can get the full METAR.

https://stationweather.com/

That's a good tool which I do use to put the metar data in the MCDU but it doesn't really show you the 'active runway', I guess you can figure it out from the wind but large airports with parallel airports may use one for landing and one for takeoffs so for those who are pedantic 😉

should it / will it   .... maybe.but then it may be downwinds / NAPS are needed

for now, cheers

I understand that you simply can not get this information from within the sim while at a distant airport.  External sources for real metar abound, but have no application within sim.  This is because the sim does not 'develop' the wx and runway conditions until the in sim atis becomes available at a specific distance.  I have tested this several times and it seems it generates this info at around 40 statute miles from the airport.  One can plan a flight with an assumed runway/approach via internet metar data, but it in no way relates to what you will get on arrival in the sim.  Even with that, there is a lagging disconnect between sim field wind and landing direction, they will not always match.  We dont have the exact information on the programming for how and when within the SDK.
