Asobo went all out on the 5 UK World update airports

Featured Replies

So much so that I have only heard of two of them.  They seem to have made up for the thin list of bespoke airports with a very long list of POIs.  I made a one-page show and tell to shed a little light on the airports.  The Shetland Islands might be an interesting visit, not so much for the little EG78 runway, but the scenic area.

If you land to, or depart from, the newer EGHC, Land's End Airport, don't miss out on visiting the interior of the terminal. It has been beautifully rendered!

I think the clue is in the word "rendered".😉 The sim version has indeed been nicely modelled.

OS:     Win11 Home; Mobo: Asus TUF Gaming Z690-Plus WiFi D4; CPU: Intel i5-12400 (Alder Lake) 4.4 GHz
RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR4 64Gb (4x16GB) 3600 MHz; GPU:  MSI Radeon RX 5700XT [8GB]
SSD:  Corsair Force MP510 (for OS);  2x 1TB & 1x 2TB Sabrent Rocket Nvme PCIe 4.0 (one for sim, two for addons)
HDD:  Seagate 3TB (Data); Seagate 1TB (Programs), ASUS TUF Gaming VG32VQ1B Curved 31.5" monitor, 1440p, 38Mbs ethernet

Fulcrum One Yoke, Honeycomb Bravo throttle, Thrustmaster Airbus TCA sidestick & throttle, Logitech Pro pedals, Xbox wireless gamepad (1st gen)

Might be a stupid question, but how do you actually get from the cockpit into the terminal. AFAIK there's no first person perspective available to walk round and interact with ground objects as in, for example, Train Sim World.

@raymar, I would have been more impressed if they’d modelled Manchester EGCC - an international airport instead of an aerodrome with grass runways.

Those small airfields are best left to Orbx. Has Barton Bridge and the nearby Trafford Centre been modelled in good detail?

Not stupid was wondering the same thing!  Actually wait, just because I'm wondering really doesn't mean it's not stupid, I'm a very poor litmus test for intelligence 🤣

I know so very little about the UK that I have to use a map just to know what I am looking at.  I worked in London in the mid 70s then moved to Oslo for a few years, then on to the South of France, so I remember just enough to be dangerous. I think most everything except the castles and bridges were built after I moved on.

You can do this with the drone view camera (INS key by default). If you have an Xbox controller its also pre configured to fly around with the drone.

At least you know that, unlike the oft-told story of an American tourist who said how neat it was that Edinburgh Castle was built so close to the shops!😁

Not quite sure you quite get how this works Ray. Asobo give a list of stuff landmarks modelled, about 80 items, and airports, about 5. Everything else is automatic, no one models it per se, it's pulled together by AI from aerial photos and mapping data and somewhat generic, unless it's photogrammetric. It seems the AI didn't recognise Meadowhall centre so it's there but flat, although M1 Tinsley viaduct is rendered nicely; not sure how Trafford centre came out since I flew up from Wales via Liverpool, but potentially AI struggled with that too.

The landmark detail is crazy, I went by Blackpool Tower and the Humberbridge, it's really overkill for a flight simulator tbh; you can go very close and see all the individual bits of the railings! That would be cool but all the stuff around the landmark is a lot less detailed.

I don’t know the finer details of how things are modelled. With some P3D airports the surrounding area is enhanced so I wondered if they’d done the same with this airfield. Seemingly not.

Barton Bridge carries the M60 motorway and is directly to the east of the airfield. It rises around 150ft over the Manchester Ship Canal so the area is deserving of detailed modelling. Enhancing the airfield without including those structures seems like a missed opportunity.

Gandalf "Edro" moment. Thanks chap.

Sennen Cove looks quite nice after you take off from land's end and some work has been done around the Cornish coast, though I still think the cliffs and rocks could do with more improvement.
