You wouldn't think such precision was possible by hand

Ever been to the pyramids at Giza? That's even more impressive, IMNSHO.

True, but impressive jointing for a large structure. Up close the joints don't compare to our Japanese carpenter hero's. 🙂

And those chisels must be as sharp as samurai swords.

And in any case, the pyramids were built by aliens with their tractor beams and atomic scale manipulation. Everybody knows that. 👍

Indeed they were. How else could they have been placed in the geographic center of the earth? That spot wasn't picked at random.

In woodworking the most precision is actually done by hand. If you dial in a hand plane correctly you can get a shaving that’s 0.001 of an inch. The saws they use also have a much thinner blade than a machine which allows for more precision in a cut. This is pretty complicated joinery and the only way they can do it is with their hand tools.

If you want to batch out a bunch of pieces that fit together well, use a machine. If you want to make one piece that fits together perfectly, use hand tools.

I'm just trying to decide if, like me, you are joking. But in case you aren't...

It was Victorian calculations that suggested such a thing... which we now know are incorrect.

I never quite got the knack with those Japanese pull saws. They have a tendency to bounce up as you pull.

Everyone knows that aliens placed them there. (S) 😁

But it adds so much to the Alien theory by believing it to be true.

Being a resident of Rowell NM and having a couple of aliens as personal friends I've asked them about the pyramids at Giza.  They tell me they know nothing about the building of the pyramids.  But, they say, they are not the only alien culture roaming the universe.  Some other galactic society might have done it.

If you think that's impressive (which it is!), watch the next video on the "Impossible Join"...

Unlike the corner join however, I can't even imagine the purpose of this hugely complex joint except for the curiosity value!

I have beautiful and somewhat elaborate kitchen cabinets made by the Amish - I found it very hard to believe that they were constructed without the use of power tools.  But after seeing these videos, who knows?

This is impressive and would be a great way of lengthening a piece of wood. If you only had pieces that were 4 feet long but needed 8 feet, you could fit two of them together without hardware.

2500 years ago the Chinese developed a joint to earthquake proof their buildings, something to behold.  Humans are pretty amazing. https://archinect.com/news/article/150019184/2-500-year-old-chinese-wood-joints-that-make-buildings-earthquake-proof

I know we joke about such things in this thread, but the ingenuity of the Japanese, with just primitive hand tools, skill and brain power, demonstrates how capable human beings are and absolutely capable of being ingenious enough to build the pyramids.
