May 23, 20215 yr A bit of a strange question I know, but after looking at the issues in the DR Congo today (poor folk!), I wondered if anyone has actually seen any satellite landscape tiles display an active red lava / magma pool in the crater, or even flowing down the sides. I am not on about the smoke or ash cloud, just the red landscape. It would be a bit of a long-shot I know, but apparently there are some volcanoes that are more or less permanently active (red glow in crater), I am just looking for one. May 23, 20215 yr Well, I have seen two active volcanoes recently, but both were on the Avsim MFS forum. May 23, 20215 yr I'm not aware af any active ones, but there is plenty of red lava textures in Iceland. Not sure if these are default or whether they have been added by one of the freeware addons I have installed. Whilst on the subject of Iceland, I've just downloaded the new 20m DEM (flightsim to) and am looking forward to testing later. May 23, 20215 yr Always amazes me why they build cities with millions of people living next to an active volcano, and then call it a problem……. People are sometimes stupid.

People are sometimes stupid. Yes, or showing people having to walk 10 to 12 miles every day to get fresh water. Strange! Anyway, I am going to check out Iceland, as I have the new DEM also, and then I have heard Mexico has a few active ones also. I will report back if I find any active craters (red ones). I might be better off scanning with Bing maps first - quicker! My microlight isn't quite cutting it for this survey! Edited May 23, 20215 yr by bobcat999 Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind). Many people who live at the foot of volcanoes are poor and mainly live from agriculture. This is a respectable choice especially as the majority of volcanoes in the world have volcanic eruptions of one time per century so for its people the calculation is quickly done. You’re more likely to die on the road than a volcano. Yah, it makes sense in those countries. Furthermore, SE of Seattle is a potential volcano waiting to blow (Mt Rainier), it may not happen, but it may. So everyone in Seattle isn't low intelligence, they just don't think about it day-to-day. Hopefully they will get enough warning if it does ever happen. We may lose our sim if Rainier blows up. May 23, 20215 yr Author Yes, I remember Mt. St. Helens. That was scary enough! EDIT: I just looked at Mount Saint Helens and Sprit Lake in Bing Maps. It looks like the satellite images are really sharp and it looks spectacular. No red lava, but I might have to give it a fly! PS. You can easily see where the side of the mountain blew off. May 23, 20215 yr Vesuvius is not very detailed in msfs but there is a freeware mod that gives it more detail. I's been a fair few years since that blew, but it provides a nice flight over the Bay of Naples which is well depicted in the sim. I don't suppose the residents of Pompeii would be too happy to see a repeat. I may also have a fly down to Mount Etna in the next few days. May 23, 20215 yr Interestingly, FZNA (Goma, DRC) was one of the the first places I explored in MSFS...I flew around Nyiragongo to check out the photoscenery in an obscure area that I'd actually seen from the air. There was a very visible seam between scenery tiles where the colors along the tile edges did not match near the volcano. In 2002 that volcano put a lava flow over the northern end of the runway, and AFAIK that northern 3000 ft of rwy was never rebuilt afterwards.
