The regulations only apply to the systems idle power consumption. And only pre built PC's. And higher powered gaming machines have a higher idle power consumption allowance to accommodate them. Television's, washing machines and fridges don't rely on higher power consumption to be better performing products, performance stays the same. Progress is attained by performing the same but more efficiently. Advances in computer technology include efficiency but power consumption often rises out of necessity. Chip progress won't be sabotaged by restricting power consumption. The advancements in the chip industry would be slowed to a crawl if they did that and the big chip manufacturers would be stuck with efficiency only improvements. We NEED better computer performance to solve many of the challenges we face. We will continue to see efficiency emphasised where it can be as we have for many years, with Gold+, Platinum, Titanium power supplies and chip power saving features like speedstep etc. But nobody is going to say to chip manufacturers, "nope, sorry, you use to much power so your latest miraculous chip isn't allowed so you are screwed and bankrupt and the world won't get your beneficial chip". But then of course you said "efficiency rated" and rating something so the consumer is aware isn't the same as restricting. Edited August 2, 20214 yr by martin-w
August 3, 20214 yr My 3090 already pulls 380watts during MSFS, glad I have a 1000w PS. While more power is great anything over 400w is going to start getting crazy to try and keep cool, there eventually going to need there own water cooled case.
